    Disney in Non-Disney Films

Having watched the classic Sullivan's Travels (for the umpteenth time) tonight on TCM it reminded me of the far reaching influence of Walt Disney. This 1941 Paramount Pictures film features scenes from the 1934 Walt Disney cartoon - Playful Pluto - starring Mickey Mouse and Pluto [one of the last B/W cartoons Disney made * ].

This film also provided the title for Touchstone Pictures' O Brother,Where Art Thou? from the Coen Brothers in 2000.

The only more recent usage I could recall was in Tom Hanks' 1996 feature film directorial debut, That Thing You Do!, where he featured the Matterhorn and Mickey himself!

Can you think of any other Disney non-Disney film cameos?

In the 2001 drama In the Bedroom there is discussion of WDW's fastpass system.

In "1941" the army general or sargeant (it's been a loooong time since I've seen it) goes to a screening of "Dumbo" and is shown crying during "Baby Mine".

In "Gremlins" after the gremlins begin wreaking havoc all over town they are shown packed into a movie theater watching a screening "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".

Well, Oh Pluto and Mickey and other Disney characters make a cameo appearance in the 1984 Christmas classic, "a Christmas Story" when the family watches the christmas parade.

There is an episode of Leave it to Beaver where the boys sneak into a monster movie instead seeing a reissue of Pinocchio and learn their lesson (no footage shown).

MGM's The Hollywood Party features Mickey Mouse and a custom Silly Symphony called Hot Chocolate Soldiers.

Disneyland appears in a Tony Randall Suzanne Pleshette comedy called 50 Pounds of Trouble.

Forbidden Planet's ID Monster was animated by Disney Studios.

Ub Iwerks effects team pulled off the attacking birds in The Birds.

Imagery from Disney's Snow White factor into the mysteries of David Lynch's Mulholland Drive.

    Footage of Dumbo in 1941.

Musical homages and snippets of When You Wish Upon a Star in Close Encounters of the Third kind.

Lots of ripped-off Disney "homages" in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Willow.

Joanie is shown wearing Mickey Mouse Club ears on early episodes of Happy Days.

Just remembered Marvin's Room starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Meryl Streep & Diane Keaton - they take a trip to WDW.

Interesting about "Marvin's Room" and "In the Bedroom". Both films are not Disney, but weren't they both from Miramax, a Disney owned company?

I thought of that as well - yes!
Miramax was never big on synergy,(not a cool priority) but those did stand out anyway!

There is also a line in Pauly Shores Son-in-law where the father threatens his fat, red headed son, that if he is not nice, they will not go to disneyland.

    Re: Disney in Non-Disney Films

Released in 1934, the Laurel and Hardy film Babes in Toyland (also known as March of the Wooden Soldiers) had characters that looked eerily similar to the Three Little Pigs and Mickey Mouse. As a personal favor to the writers and producers of the film (specifically Hal Roach, I believe), Walt gave his permission to use the characters.

In 1961, Disney would release its own version of Babes in Toyland starring Annette Funicello.

Didn't look closely enough to see if this was mentioned yet, but Magenta wears Mickey ears backwards in Rocky Horror Picture Show

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe...

A reference to Disneyland was made by Richard Attenborough's character in the original Jurassic Park, saying how rocky it's opening was in 1956(hehe).

I loved that, because they said something about the Pirates not eating the guests, but Pirates didn't open for over a decade after the park!

And most recently, clear homages were present in 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' which featured a salute to it's a small world during the introduction of Willy Wonka to the golden ticket holders, and a bittersweet homage to Skyway thru the Matterhorn when Wonka's glass elevator suspended from cables passed behind a suspiciously Swiss-shaped Fudge Mountain.

The simpsons make several parodies of Disneyland attractions in their shows.

Plus, in the animated series, Family Guy, a Micheal Eisner character has made several cameo appearances.

There was also another Family Guy episode where Walt Disney was sitting at a drawing board and drawing a picture of Minnie Mouse nude. It was quite funny.
