'The Rocketeer' creator Dave Stevens has died

Dave Stevens - Father of the Rocketeer - has passed away...

"...received a call from Dave Stevens' mother that Dave passed on yesterday. She said it was a blessing, as Dave had been suffering a lot of pain, due to chemo and had no prospects for it "getting better".

Stevens' ink work was some of the absolute most elegant and confidently rendered art in the comic's professions. While some artists have to resort to paint, Dave's inked characters seemed to leap off the page at you. That Dave created the Rocketeer - and then populated his world with Betty Page and the creeper, Rondo Hatton - well - for vintage film geeks - his comics allowed characters to give another performance for all of us greedy enough to want them to live on. Dave also was a brilliant master of PIN UP ART. Cheesecake, good girl and bad girl poses that never dived into raunch, but titillated and thrilled.

In person, Dave was a gas to be around. Talking about movies, pin-ups and specifically one of my favorite subjects... Commander Cody. We've lost a master, too early in his life. Best wishes to his family.

I'm shocked to hear this. As a fan of both the Rocketeer and Betty Page, I own a great debt to Mr. Stevens. I even planned a Rocketeer costume for last year that unfortunately fell through.

RIP Dave Stevens. The Rocketeer will always be to the rescue.

OH NO! I'm so sad... his dreams of seeing a Rocketeer sequel never fulfilled. My dream of the same thing might have died with him.

    Rest in peace.

    This is very sad.

From all I've read, he was born after his time and now has gone before his time.
He was an avid connoisseur of all things vintage, from artwork to music, to anything else you could think of.

He was a missing link to a bygone era and that link is now tragically broken.

    He will be missed.

Sorry to see this man go.

I have quite a fascination with era and the movie. I have quite a bit of memorabilia from this movie.

I've always felt the movie was under-rated.

I was lucky enough to have him sign a movie poster, only to have it destroyed accidentally by one of my family members. Wish I still had it.

    RIP Dave.

So sad... I always did love the art that he produced. Might not have known him if it wasn't for Disney's help in that little film.

Fortunately, there's still plenty of Rocketeer items to be found around the DHS park...

Re: 'The Rocketeer' creator Dave Stevens has died

Such a lovely rememberance from The Beat's Heidi MacDonald:

In recent years “What ever happened to Dave Stevens?” became a frequent message board topic. He had always been a notoriously slow artist, and in recent years lived off of commissions for the pin-up art he excelled at.

Dave was the last artist of an innocent era when showing less and teasing more was the way to eroticism. He was much more than that, of course. His artwork burst with the heroic innocence and determination of an America that existed fully only on the printed page and the movie screen. Even when drawing some bondage or spanking scene, his art was human, lively, caring.

Like the man. I have so many memories of Dave. Cat Yronwode once told me that Dave was unique among cartoonists because he wore clothes that fit him, which sounds like a sorry compliment, but Dave did stand out among the cartoonists of that time for paying a lot of attention to his appearance — Cliff Secord, the hero of the Rocketeer, was obviously based visually on Dave. It didn’t come off as vanity, but wanting to give an appearance that went with the art. It was part of his esthetic. Once he gave me a ride to a Golden Apple party in what I called “Old Betsy” his beloved vintage Ford. (I had no car when I first moved to LA and was always dependent on the kindness of friends.) Arriving in such a vehicle with a dashing, handsome man like Dave was the kind of thing that a girl writes about in her diary that night.

I took a picture with the walkaround 'Rocketeer' in Tomorrowland too, I hope to find it one day.

Re: 'The Rocketeer' creator Dave Stevens has died

The Rocketeer was a great creation and a great movie. It's too bad Disney didn't turn into a franchise and made sequels for it, that is, with the ending they gave it. A trilogy would've been great.
