Skyy Spirits Finds Love with 'Sex and the City'

    March 17, 2008

    By Eric Newman
    Brandweek

The Sex and the City girls will be mixing up their Cosmos with Skyy Vodka this May.

Skyy Spirits, San Francisco, announced today that its vodka will be the official spirit brand of New Line Cinema's Sex and the City, a much-hyped forthcoming film that revisits a popular HBO series. Skyy Vodka and Cabo Wabo Tequila will be featured prominently in the film, while back bars will be stocked with other alcoholic beverages from Skyy's house collection including Midori, Cutty Sark and Campari.

Skyy will unveil a series of print, online and outdoor co-branded ads that will rollout starting in late April. The ads will run in books such as Entertainment Weekly and OK!, and outdoor in New York City and Los Angeles. An online sweepstakes will kick off April 1 and will run through May 5 on Skyy's Web site (www.skyy.com/sexandthecity). The grand prize is a two-day trip for two to the New York City premiere of Sex and the City.

Kirsten van Sickle, senior brand manager at Skyy, said the TV series' reputation for high glamour and contemporary style made it a good fit for a marketing deal with New Line Cinema.

"Sex and the City was the single most cultural icon that reinvented the cocktail craze back when it was a series on HBO, when it really helped to mainstream the cosmopolitan and cocktail culture," van Sickle said. "We really think that the build up to this film is like the Super Bowl for women. People are planning to see it months in advance, and you can't open any magazine without seeing coverage of it. We think that the film will be yet another cultural phenomenon."

As part of its on-premise marketing, the company also has created signature cocktails, which incorporate Skyy products, inspired by personalities of the lead characters Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. "The Carrie," for example, will be a Skyy cosmopolitan cocktail mixed with mango juice, "The Samantha" will be a tequila cocktail made with Cabo Wabo, and "The Miranda" will use Campari as the main ingredient.

The brand's promotional agenda also includes two charity screenings of the film, following its premiere. The first, held in Los Angeles, will benefit the AIDS Project LA, and the second, held in San Francisco, will benefit the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

'Sex and the City' posters blocked in 2 Israeli cities

JERUSALEM (AP) — There's going to be "sex" — but not in two Israeli cities.

The Israeli distributor of the soon-to-be-released Sex and the City movie won't be hanging advertising posters and billboards in Jerusalem and Petah Tikva.

A company spokesman says the two cities have large religious populations and municipal officials don't want the word "sex" on display.

Ads for the movie are to go up elsewhere in Israel on Tuesday night.

The worldwide release of the movie is scheduled for May 29.

'Sex and the City' feels as familiar as a favorite shoe

    Updated 8m ago

Kristin Davis star in Sex and the City.

It's an unabashed guilty pleasure that goes down as smoothly as a chilled cosmo. Fans of the HBO series are sure to enjoy the reunion of the fab four in Sex and the City: The Movie (*** out of four), who remain glamorous and guy-obsessed.

Even more than on the TV series, the movie is more about style than substance. The film feels exceedingly familiar — so much so that most of the plot turns can be guessed well before they happen. The movie's nearly 2 hours are padded with wardrobe change montages that could test the nerves of even the most die-hard fashionista. Most disappointing is the paucity of clever quips, though the film is written and directed by series veteran Michael Patrick King.

Still, there is something undeniably satisfying about the effort, which ties up all the loose ends more decisively than the series finale.

The bonds of friendship are celebrated above all — as is the fact that these women are well into middle age, have been through the romance wars and are stronger for it.
But, the movie, like the series, is all about the emotional ups and downs of the central quartet of sartorially resplendent women. Sex will polarize the sexes. Women will be entranced by the soap opera while men will wonder what all the fuss is about.

Amid the style, sass and sexiness is plenty of sentimentality, especially at the satisfying conclusion.
As indulgences go, this one is easier on the waistline than downing a tub of Ben & Jerry's and won't deplete the wallet like a Louis Vuitton handbag. (Running time: 2 hours, 22 minutes. Rated R for strong sexual content, graphic nudity and language. Opens tonight in select theaters and Friday nationwide.)

I can't wait! I've got opening night tickets at Universal CityWalk and it's been sold out since Wednesday. I'm a little scared to think of waiting in line for an hour for a good seat - haven't done that since....ever!

Re: 'Sex and the City' The Movie - Get Carried Away

It's always pretty fun there so you should be in a great crowd! Enjoy!

Back during the show's last two mini-seasons a group of friends (and their friends) used to cram into various apts. & houses to party and watch the show. About a half dozen times we'd rent hotel rooms and make an even bigger event out of it. Descending upon places such as the Universeral City Hilton, the Sunset Marquis and even the Beverly Hills Hotel. Such big fun!

    We're doing a birthday/SATC group tomorrow night, can't wait!

'Sex' to earn $20 million Friday

Projected gross best yet for a romantic comedy

    By Pamela McClintock
    Variety
    May 30, 2008

Breaking all the rules about chick flicks, New Line and Warner Bros.' bigscreen adaptation "Sex and the City" is expected to gross at least $20 million in its opening day, a sum usually reserved for male-driven event films or family fare.

Friday's projected gross marks the best opening day number ever for a romantic comedy. Twentieth Century Fox's 2006 summer hit, "The Devil Wears Prada," nabbed $9.4 million on its opening Friday and $27.5 million for that weekend.

Heading into this weekend, Paramount holdover "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" had the advantage. Now, the race for the weekend crown could be much closer, with the possibility of a "Sex and the City" upset.

Women, particularly women over 25, aren't usually synonymous with big box-office openings. "Sex and the City," rated R and playing on 3,285 screens, is a lusty exception.

Women and their friends bought advance tickets for the film throughout this week, resulting in sold-out Friday shows in many top markets. It's been four years since "Sex and the City" ended its run on HBO.
