Pixar Play Parade performances halted due to Float Damage - 3/20/08

During the March 19th performance of the new Pixar Play Parade, one of the Pendulums from the "a bug's life" unit (float) broke off. No one was seriously injured due to the incident, but some debris did go into the audience.

Luckily, the performer on the swing heard a loud crack and got off the swing before it broke off.

All the floats in the Parade now have to be re-inspected to make sure they are safe.

Tonight's performance (March 21st) has already been cancelled, and there is the possibility of additional cancellations.

    EDIT FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Brady MacDonald of the Los Angeles Times contacted the Disneyland Media Relations department, and got this official response.

During the March 19 performance of the Pixar Play Parade at Disney's
California Adventure, one of the pendulum swings onboard a float vehicle
came unhooked from its post. No Cast Members or Guests were injured.
In an abundance of caution, we temporarily suspended performances of the
Pixar Play Parade on March 20 and 21 to allow for further inspection and
    evaluation.

any photos of the specific unit? Pre-broke?

I was curious about the swings that are on the toy story float.. the bar that just goes through the toy dinosaur's mouth looked like it needed to be pretty sturdy!

Re: Pixar Play Parade performances halted due to Float Damage - 3/20/08

That's good no one got hurt. I remember reading in the Tokyo Disneyland forum where a spike with planets on the Buzz Lightyear float in the Moving On parade broke during a performance, narrowly missing Buzz on a car orbiting the float. However, it did say a couple guests were injured. The CMs tended to the injured while other CMs surrounded the piece that fell off. Since the parade stopped, the music kept going and the performers kept the crowd calm and entertained.

Does anyone know how the CMs and performers handled the situation?

Better safe than sorry. I'm glad nobody was injured because of this. Hopefully they do a THOROUGH inspection to make sure everything else is okay.

Anyone else noticing a pattern here? First the Buzz float in TDL, now the PPP here in DCA....is DCE in serious need of a new structural engineer, or is there a lack thereof?

In the Tokyo "Dreams on Parade: Movin' On" accident, the steel pole that held the decorative planets broke at the base and fell over. NO ONE was injured in the Tokyo accident. I repeat, no one was injured.

Well, it's good to remember that TDL's Dreams on Parade had been going for a little under 5 years (it was for their 20th anniversary, and then changed just the music, float order, and some costumes to become "Movin' On" later) when the accident happened. I'm not saying that makes it better, just that it never had a problem (that I know of) until then, so it was possibly a freak accident. If we start seeing other structural problems with new parades, then I'll be worried.

Is the parade still down today? I'm hearing strange rumors that another float was damaged as well due to fire (the Nemo float). But that is a total rumor and I have no idea if it is true or not. Any parade people know what's going on with this parade?

Re: Pixar Play Parade performances halted due to Float Damage - 3/20/08

Went to the park this afternoon, the Pixar Play Parade did go on as scheduled.

But the did not bring out the "a bug's life" float, or any of its characters.

But the Nemo float and associated performers did appear.

One thing I noticed, a LOT less water (but it is still present), and a LOT of bubbles in place of the water, especially at the end of the parade.
