Mainland Vice President Zeng Qinghong, who oversees Hong Kong and Macau affairs, is set to visit for three days to officiate at the opening of Disneyland September 12, according to sources close to Beijing.
The trip will be significant as Zeng will be the first key official to visit the Hong Kong following chief executive Tung Chee-hwa's departure in March this year and Donald Tsang's election as Hong Kong's leader.
Tung's departure and Tsang's elevation ended Beijing's overhaul of Hong Kong's government, sources said, and Zeng visit will be to boost the morale of the new administration.
It will also be to call for unity of Tsang's ruling team, sources said.
According to a government source, Zeng's trip will also help the chief executive to diffuse mounting pressure for the central government to allow all 60 legislators to visit Beijing, which was an election pledge by Tsang during his campaign trail in June.
