The high artistic expectation come from the first 3 movies being so great. They have had 19 years to think of ideas for Indy 4 and all they gave us was a lazy, half baked film that doesn't begin to resemble the classic Indy trilogy.

I originally gave this 3 out of 5, but instead I have decided to give it 2 out of 5. I have gone through many stages with this movie (kind of like people who are getting divorced). At first I though it was decent, but nowhere near as good as the original trilogy. Now, I am starting to realize that it just flat out sucked, like worse than The Phantom Menace. The Phantom Menace had major flaws, but at least it wasn't as flat out lazy as Indy 4.
I'm not saying it didn't have artistic expectations. That's an ENTIRELY different topic. On that note, I feel it is different because the source material for it is a lot different, but it sounds a lot like a copout to me. I didn't have as much of a problem with it.

As for the financial expectations, that covers the fans more than anything and that's not going to be enough. The fact that they sunk like $300 million into MARKETING for the movie made me worry about how secure they were in the 19 year span being able to bring people into the seats on its own.

well everyone I just got back from the movies at downtown disney with fellow mcers.

what a fun movie it turned out to be. The graveyard scenes were kinda creepy and so were the natives as well. Shea did great job in this movie as he is moving up in the movie world. Two thumps up for me here. Some of the scenes had me so excited.

I haven't fallen asleep at a movie in a long time. But I did during this film. I'll try to see it again on DVD I suppose, but I was disappointed. I think others have covered the main problems with the plot and action bits. *sigh*.

As a harcore Indy fan, it wasn't just the ending that ruined the movie, it was how soft, goofy, and unexciting the entire film was that ruined the movie. That was still pretty funny though.

    Both pictures are great.

I posted them to the Facebook group where the only reactions seem to be:

"This movie is %&#$" or "Anyone who doesn't love this movie as much as I do is a $&%#", with nothing in between. Sort of funny, but really really sad too.

I agree with pretty much every criticism of the movie, but still loved it. Go figure. The only unfounded criticism IMO is of the ending, which may be fantastical, but is completely appropriate when one consideres the films of yesteryear that this one is meant to reflect.

And I gotta say, I just saw National Treasure 2, and it had me yearning for the logic and realism of Crystal Skull in comparison. I didn't mind the movie, but I questioned the logic of just about everything that happened. Indy is still in a league above most other films.

Re: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (MiceChat Reviews)

I think there's a lot of unfair criticism on George Lucas, who, yeah, came up with the story (for all previous indy movies too). I mean, we know Spielberg. He wouldn't do anything unless he believed in it too. Granted Temple of Doom became much darker than both Spielberg and Lucas expected but it still turned into an incredibly entertaining film.

If Spielberg thought the groundhogs were too much, he would have cut it. If he actually LEARNED from The Lost World's gymnastics girl against the velociraptors, he would have skipped on the Tarzan scene (also written by David Koepp).

The truth is, Spielberg is just as cheeseball as Lucas is sometimes (snake surprise, chilled monkey brain, etc in temple of doom was all spielberg) and they both should be taking equal credit for the film. Lucas came up with the story and I don't think the story is that bad, it's the way it was written. It was the pacing. It was the second half of the film that became "Indiana Jones and the Hour of Exposition".

Now, I just watched it for the 2nd time this evening and I gotta say, it's a far better experience when you know what crap is coming your way. You watch it for what it is and you can either hate it harder, or it can become somewhat more acceptable. The problems I cited earlier, they're still there. But I'm definitely giving it a bigger break than I did when I saw it the first time.

Things that still bother me though, is the character of Mac and the whole second half of the film. It's just very sluggish, even while being interesting. I'll buy this on DVD and basically stop right after the motorcycle chase through the campus. Up to that point is a pretty awesome movie.

Saw it for my second time tonight. Loved it! Generally similar reasons as Coheteboy experience mentioned above. And I will buy the Blu-ray collection when it comes out. Nuff said (tho' I have no doubt more and more will be said after this post. ).

And AWESOME shots, Tui, especially the first one. Thanks for posting 'em.

Although KOTCS has had much criticism for its plot, it could have been a lot worse...

It could have had a dull plot about a trade embargo and feature an irritating CGI cretin.

Indy makes $311 million world wide

Seems to have done very well despite all the negative remarks being made here.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" chased down $311.1 million from moviegoers around the world, as nostalgic fans brought along their children to watch Harrison Ford's latest escapades, distributor Paramount Pictures said on Monday.

The tally included $151.1 million from the United States and Canada -- the second-highest U.S. Memorial Day holiday weekend opening in history -- and $160 million from No. 1 launches in 61 other countries, the studio said.
Foreign highlights included $24 million in Britain and $14 million in France. Sales in France were boosted by the hype surrounding its glitzy world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on the French Riviera last Sunday.
