Re: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (MiceChat Reviews)

Saw the film last Saturday. Enjoyed it immensely. It wasn't great, it wasn't astounding, but it was a satisfying film, and I liked it. Seeing Indy in a 1950s setting was a bit different, but it all made a lot of sense to me. Hearing about all he'd done during WWII also made a lot of sense, character-wise. I'll definitely be buying the DVD when it comes out.

Did it need to be made? No, not really. But if one is going to do an Indy movie now, this is the way to do it. I have no complaints.

I liked it a lot. Of course it has flaws; so did the first three. It's almost supposed to be far-fetched and silly, it's part of the charm. Of course Indy should have died long ago from any remotely logical standpoint. Of course the villains are cartoonish. Of course digital countdowns and excellently timed crumbling temples are cliches. It's all part of the fun, and it's been that way since the first movie.

The only (for lack of a better word) unforgivable flaw I saw was Marion's character, which was a little flat and lacked the feistiness she used to have. Karen Allen played her with a motherly demeanor that belongs in a Lifetime original movie, almost winking at the camera as if to say "I'm only PLAYING angry, children".

After hearing about all the awesome stuff "Indy" did in WWII, I'm almost pretty pissed they didn't make one 10-15 years ago to show that part of the story.

Of course, it probably had very little to do with archeology, but still, would have been cool.

I wonder if they'll come out with an animated movie/series telling the story of Indy and the war.

    DON'T GET ANY IDEAS LUCAS!!!

Re: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (MiceChat Reviews)

I thought it was OK, not the best, but not terrible. It was fun and unbelievable, but that's what Indy's about. I don't care about the totally unrealistic parts (like surviving in the refrigerator) as long as it's exciting and fun, which most of it was.

    Here are my nitpicks:

Aliens? Really? I stayed away from spoilers, so I wasn't expecting that at all.

I haven't read all the reviews, but I do agree that the lighting was way off in some parts, to the point of being a distraction.

I wished Indy would've used his whip more.

Cate Blanchett's accent came and went. Again, distracting at times.

What the hell was with the prairie dogs? I expected one to pop up at the end like in America Sings.

The ant scene- over the top.

    Shia swinging with monkeys?

(The last three seem to be Lucas wanting to put as much CGI in as possible without any real reason for it.)

Seriously! I thought we were going to hear more about that for sure.

I know this is arguable at best, but I wouldn't group the ants into the CGI business and wouldn't gripe about them too much. In a film that many people cite as being devoid of danger for our heroes, I don't know which part got much closer to "danger" than the ants in various places, especially because they didn't know the skull was repellent for a while. I see plenty of danger in fighting in a small circle of ants with some big Russian dude, knowing that if I go down, the ants are going to EAT ME. Also led to a good hat gag.

Could have done without the prairie dogs, but I thought the expression on the one after Indy got out of the fridge was great. As for the monkeys, I laughed when Shia went up into the tree and had their encounter, but everything involving them after that wasn't a big plus to me.

I mean, it frustrates me because I know Spielberg wanted to go big on practical effects and some of the most blatant use of CGI in the film was unnecessary.

The ants were clearly there to follow the tradition of snakes (Raiders), Bugs (Doom) and rats (Crusade). I actually like that sequence though particularly when followed with the drivng-off-the-cliff scene. It was the exact point of the third waterfall that the movie decended into a farce (excepting the Tarzan scene).

I thought it was a bit much when the ants did a circus act and climbed one another to reach Cate Blanchett, haha. But it was a fine scene.

And well, the Temple of Doom was probably just as much of a farce as this one. People tend to forgive everything in a beloved classic, but a new film gets all the scrutiny in the world.

I'm dead serious when I say this: I swear that I've seen ants ACTUALLY do this on a nature show before.

Did they use each other to form ladders to attack their prey? And if crushed, do they look like BBQ sauce?

Here are the only three things that bothered me
    Spoiler
First off swinging in the banches, I mean come on that's lame
Saucers? It just didn't look right having a UFO like that come out of the Collapsing Temple
Last thing, what the hell was that about the tree coming back up and smacking the Russians? What is this Rocky and Bullwinkle?

    My other thought:

Henry Jones III (Shia) nickname was Mutt.

Was this a nod to "Indiana" being named after the dog?

oh my gosh!!!! that's brilliant!!! i didn't catch that!!!! Good catch!

(that's my favorite scene in Last Crusade too!)

I agree with all you micers. My main thought was this:

after searching and searching for just the right script for another Indy movie...the BEST they could come up with was ....

    Spoiler
    Indy vs. The Aliens?
