MAC AND ME -- 20 year anniversary of the biggest ripoff of E.T.

Come this August, it will be the 20 year anniversary of a landmark film: the biggest E.T. ripoff in history funded by McDonald's. If you've seen E.T., you know the story. But instead of Reese's Pieces, Mac drinks Coke and eats skittles. Instead of a bicycle, the kid is in a wheelchair. Instead of a score by John Williams, you have a score by Alan Silvestri (Back to the Future).

If you never heard of this film, you're lucky. But for fun, here's some clips that are absolute GOLD.

    The Infamous Wheelchair Scene (hilarious)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=http:...?v=K5le9sYdYkM

Ronald McDonald introduces the film in this theatrical trailer:

The Full McDonald's Dance Scene. In this scene, there's a birthday party at MCDonald's. Mac is dressed up in a teddy bear outfit and everyone thinks he's a plush toy... despite the fact that he has crazy long arms and scary eyes. The government agents come to hunt down Mac but they distract them with a dance number. Even the high school football team gets involved! Must be seen to be believed. Ronald McDonald earned a razzie for Worst New Actor in this film.

In closing, I present the "SCARY" edit of the Mac and Me trailer.

So who else remembers this lousy movie??

Sadly, I remember this sitting lonely on the New Releases shelves at the video store I worked at during high school. Oy.

Wow. I had great memories of that movie as a child. But reviewing those clips... I can only conclude that I was chewing on the paint chips pretty hard back then.

Exactly. And the argument that some of us only like certain things because of Nostalgia can eat my shorts.

This movie is one of my all time favorites. I recommend it in a double feature with the E.T ripoff To Catch a Yeti:

You have brought up a painful suppressed memory. I had completely forgotten about that awful Mac and Me and now it is a fresh wound.

Would you like to pour salt in the wound and bring up images of Howard the Duck?

I still clearly remember going to the McDonald's across Harbor Blvd. during the Mac and Me promotion.

It was awful then, and it's awful now.

I feel bad, but I laughed out loud when I saw that. I think I'm gonna go to Wendy's tomorrow.

Someone on IMDB called it ET II: The Electric Boogaloo.

This movie truly nuked the fridge. They should make a sequel called Big Mac and Me.

    I don't remember Mac & Me.

Howard The Duck was a cinematic masterpiece! Cheesetastic and wonderful. The only bad part was the special relationship between Howard and Lea Thompson's charcter.

Are you going to pick on Hudson Hawk next?

Anything listed on the park maps as an attraction is fair game for inclusion in the Rally.
I cannot confirm nor deny the inclusion of any attraction in the Rally.

Wow. That is truly terrible. I can see why it could be considered a cult classic. I think I saw the movie back in the day, but mercifully did not retain any memories of the experience.

The Wikipedia article is interesting (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_and_Me). In regards to paid product placements: "However, according to Seth Stevenson, "there was no quid pro quo between the filmmakers and these companies." In spite of the latter statement, during the scene where Mac is drinking a Coca-Cola, director Stewart Raffill comedically holds up four $100 bills in the background."

The McDonald's Dance Scene.... I saw it, but I still can't believe it.

    Wow. Just... wow.

I remember this movie, but I never saw it. I'm really glad I didn't.

I forgot to add that the "scary" edit actually makes it look like a good movie!
