    Hmmm good point about the oldies. But the current "original song" award has been effect in a long time. It's also why Hairspray was ignored and also why the score for THERE WILL BE BLOOD wasn't even considered as many of the songs were written previously as separate works.

    As far as I know it's always been for original songs. There has been a trend in recent adaptations to write one or two original songs in the movie just so it can get some Oscar recognition. Just Move On from Chicago and Ladies' Choice from Hairspray are the two that spring to mind. I'm not really a fan of the practice. Sometimes the songs are in congruent or inferior to the originals and it creates a blaring inconsistency in the film.

    I really don't feel that Sondheim is suffering for recognition. He was thanked at the Tony's more than god this year. Which is really funny considering none of his shows won. People just kept thanking him for inspiring them..

    I raise my Kitties right.... they only watch the finest shows.
