Ok, so my last few visits to the cinema have thrown up some trailers for upcoming animated sequels. Both of these were interesting in that they were trailers made up of a scene from the movies suggesting that these films are both still very much 'works in progress'.
Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaur - quite pleased to see this one even though Ice Age 2 was a bit of a let down. Of course the trailer features Scrat and his eventual encounter with a T-rex which got the whole theatre laughing.
Madagascar: Back 2 Africa - WTF?! Does Madagascar warrant or even deserve a sequel? My faith in Dreamworks animation was just getting set when I saw this. The original was one of their worst and I can't say that this film looks any better. Maybe a movie spin-off for the penguins or the lemurs, but the central four characters are just so irritating. What next? Shark Tale: The Revenge?
Dreamworks of course is also working on Shrek Goes Fourth while over at Disney, Lassiter has stopped all animated sequels in an attempt to improve the quality (excepting Toy Story 3 which is one franchise I would be happy to see continue forever).
With today's animated movies having such a wide variance in quality (from Wall-E to Space Chimps) where does the animated sequel sit? And which animated movies would you like to see get the sequel treatment?
