    'Madagascar' roars to top spot

DreamWorks animated film nets $17.5 mill Friday

    By Anthony D'Alessandro, Pamela McClintock
    Variety

There was no escaping the strength of DreamWorks Animation-Paramount's "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa," which opened Friday in 4,056 theaters to gross a hefty $17.5 million.

The success of toon sequel "Madagascar 2" solidifies DreamWorks Animation's second film franchise after "Shrek." The pic's opening-day haul of $17.5 million is the best ever for a non-holiday DreamWorks animation toon.
The No. 3 spot went to Disney powerhouse "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," which was up more than 47% from last Friday in grossing $2.5 million from 3,464 runs for a cume of $68.9 million.

In Hollywood, as a rule of thumb, nothing beats cute animals. This weekend was no different.

The latest DreamWorks animation fest, " Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa," surpassed expectations, bringing in $63.5 million in its opening weekend. That put it way ahead of any competition and landed the "Madagascar" sequel the third-biggest opening weekend ever for a DreamWorks picture, behind "Shrek 2" and "Shrek the Third."
Speaking of comedy, Universal's "Role Models," starring Paul Rudd, netted second place, bringing in $19.3 million at the box office. That was perhaps the weekend's biggest surprise, as it nearly doubled prognostications. Disney's "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" stayed strong in its third weekend, landing enough teeny-boppers to add $9.3 million to its total haul, now standing at $75.7 million, according to data tracker Media by Numbers.

Grossing $89 million in the U.S., the movie will street as a standard-definition single disc ($29.99), standard two-disc extended edition ($34.99) and Blu-ray three-disc set ($39.99). Both two-disc and Blu-ray versions hold a digital copy and such bonus features as cast goodbyes, bloopers, deleted scenes and featurettes. The High School Musical 3 Blu-ray will exclusively offer BD Live Web interactivity as well as new cast profiles and a Senior Awards feature.

This third High School Musical installment—in which Wildcat classmates shoot hoops, sing and dance—follows hefty past success for the franchise’s initial entries. The first High School Musical was the No. 1 TV movie on DVD in 2006, according to Disney.

The studio also notes that its second installment was the top-selling TV property on DVD in 2007.
