I'm going to have to watch the Girswold's first adventure again one of these days. A few weeks ago I was down at the Grand Canyon and drove through Monument Valley, and I was thinking to myself "Hey this is where Clarke went running through the desert trying to find a gas station." lol. I didn't steal any money out of a cash register at the Grand Canyon though. I've got all four Griswold adventures in my DVD collection, except that hideous Christmas Vacation 2: Eddie's Island Adventure, which thankfully, John Hughes had nothing to do with, just his characters went to waste.

European Vacation is fun... Vegas makes me laugh (not great by any means)... Christmas Vacation (original) is a holiday tradition for my family! Nothing says "happy holidays" like plugging in the tree lights after the cat takes a bite out of them... best scene ever...

To me, the best scene was "Merry Christmas! S****er was full!"

G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra-
Best action fun movie this summer. The movie was way better than (cough) Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. The flashbacks were great and the movie explained many of the characters origins. I can't believe people are bad mouthing this movie. G.I. Joe Rise of the Cobra wasn't that long, but still entertaining. It has tons of action scenes and some funny moments. Knowing is half the battle. I do want to watch it a second time maybe later this month. Oh, Black Eyed Peas "Boom Boom Pow" remixed is used for music at the end credits. Watch out for that.

Yo! Joe!

G.I Joe: Rise of the Cobra- It was a lot of fun for an action movie. Just don't expect a lot of high-class acting or anything like character development. I think they did okay with the flashback scenes, although I did question the sequence with the origin of that silent ninja.
Spoiler
Overall, some of the storylines were generic "I-have-a-vendetta-against-someone" type, but that is expected.

My rating: **1/2 (out of 4). Fun, but forgettable.

Re: The "What Movie did you just see" thread STRIKES BACK

Good lord, G.I.JOE RISE OF COBRA (or GIJROC for sediment) was the worst movie of the summer, period. I thought Transformers 2 was the worst originally, but no... this takes the cake by a long shot.

Horrible direction by Stephen Sommers (what's with all the flashbacks that really don't amount to ANYTHING?). Horrible score by Alan Silvestri... what happened?? Horrible casting... and by that I mean that Marlon Wayans was not my main gripe... when he clearly SHOULD BE. Though he DID annoy me. The horrible casting lead to the horrible acting and... possibly some of the worst CGI I've seen in a while.

When I come out of an action movie, I shouldn't be thinking "wow, that was the fakest polar bear I've ever seen".

This movie is way too violent for the kids that are buying these toys and way too stupid for the grown ups that grew up with the toys. This was just a big mess after another. And if it's really a 2 hour toy commercial, it failed to convince me to buy any toys.

So how is this so much worse than Transformers 2, which I thought was also horrible? Transformers 2 at least LOOKED good. It was polished. It had insanely awesome effects. It had mostly decent acting. It had Optimus Prime. It MADE me want to buy transformers toys! It's really sad when I wish that Michael Bay directed this.

Delta 6 Accelerator Suit?? Really??

Re: The "What Movie did you just see" thread STRIKES BACK

I have to be honest in saying that price does make a difference when I see a film. If I pay the area average (about $10) then my expectations are a lot higher. If I pay $1.75- $3 at the cheap theaters then I'm not nearly as critical.

Star Trek- as a rule I must see space movies on the big screen before I decide to rent them. The various wide panning space shots all but demand the large screen viewing. As a story it was predictable. As a character based prequel I think it tried too hard. The "saving grace" IMHO was the $1.75 price... without that I wouldn't have bothered. Abrams took the same standard formula for Star Trek (we fight some random upset alien to save the Federation), cast a younger crew, and called it a prequel.

Year One- I missed the opening 10 minutes of this film... if someone can honestly explain how those 10 minutes would "drastically change my perception" then I would be willing to re-write my thoughts. For me Year One failed. I feel they attempted a Mel Brooks "Space Balls" version of various biblical stories. They relied heavily on subpar situational sight gags and gross-out comedy. It was both predictable and pathetic. While it has some memorable quotes... all in all I don't even feel it was worth the $1.75

We just got back from Julie & Julia. It was a really cute movie, and Meryl Streep was brilliant as Julia Child!

For some reason whenever I hear Julia Child's voice I have an immediate flashback to Dan Aykroyd's version in SNL!

Camille- I really should have read the back of the box first and not just rented it because it had James Franco in it. Really weird movie.

I was planning on seeing G. I. Joe tonight, but I think I'll go see Julie & Julia instead.
