20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo

Director McG will soon leave the future (Terminator Salvation) and travel to the ocean's depths as he's been tasked to direct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo. Variety reports Walt Disney has grabbed the director to lead their family adventure which is getting fast tracked to the big screen, based on a screenplay by Bill Marsilli. Sean Baily is producing with McG's Wonderland Sound and Vision.
Plot Concept:The film is an origin story of Nemo as he creates his warship, the Nautilus. The characters come from the Jules Verne novel. The 1954 original 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was the first live-action film made by Walt Disney, became the second-highest grossing film that year and won three Oscars.
The trade reports this will be McG's next project shot between the latest Terminator feature and the film's sequel, which he is in discussions to supervise development and direct for Warner Bros.
Hmm, is this a good idea, messing with a classic?

No.

Nor is employing a hack like McG.

However, Terminator Salvation looks like it may be half-decent so I will reserve judgment.

The main issue would surely be that 'today's kids' don't know who Captain Nemo is ("he's that little fish who lost his dad right?") and have never seen such an old film as 20KUTS. If this plot line is accurate is smells like the start of a hoped-for franchise.

Where's the giant squid when you need him?

Went to review McG's imdb profile. I've only seen Charlie's Angels of anything on his profile. Not a great flick, some two hours of mindless diversion as I remember. T:S does look appealing, so I'm keeping an open mind on that flick. Leagues tho'? I'm scared it'll get dumbed down to something like National Treasure which I thought were okay. If it's to be like NT, they both made bucks for Disney, which is the bottom line. It should also be noted that Disney's redoing Witch Mountain and TRON in some fashion, so to that degree we shouldn't be surprised. And to be honest, I myself wouldn't mind a new The Black Hole. I guess the proof with all these will be with the director. McG? I'm leaning "Nay" (thumbs down).

As I understand it, it's more of a prequel than a remake right?

Plus, isn't this wrong:

Wasn't the first Disney live action film Treasure Island?

Yes, and Disney's version was definitely not the first live action version of the story either.
