Re: Pixar's Up - MiceChat Reviews!

There are 2 mentions in the movie that are actually nods to real life places near Pixar. The first is the Ice Cream parlor. It's modeled after a place on the Piedmont /Oakland border (and about 3 blocks from my house) called Fentons Creamery. A local landmark that has been around since 1894. (Fentons Creamery and Restaurant)

The second is the 'Hamburger Cake', which is from Merritt Bakery in Oakland. SFGate actually did an article about it at The Poop : Pixar pays tribute to the Merritt Bakery burger cake.

It'd be great to see Pixar animate that skit with Russell in it.

LOL. Maybe that will be an extra short on the DVD, and call it Beer Up!

Re: Pixar's Up - MiceChat Reviews!

The film was excellent, I liked it even more than I thought I would. The D23 showing was a lot of fun and the free gift was good too :-)

The 3D is done well, but I'd enjoy the film just as much or more without it. Anytime you are 'aware' of the 3D, it takes you out of the film and I find that bothers me.

The previews were good. Princess and the Frog looks like it will be very good. I wasn't impressed with the GForce thing, it did not make me want to see the film at all. Toy Story 3 should be good and of course the audience loved hearing John Ratzenberger's voice right after he made a live appearance.

The stage show I really just didn't care for. It's one of those typical Disney live shows that seem like they were developed by people living in a cave who think "this is what the youngsters like nowadays" It's loud and it's energetic but it adds nothing to the experience and of course has nothing at all to do with the film.

I always like the Disney medley played on the giant Wurlitzer.

But UP! was the highlight and it is an example of excellence in filmmaking. Pixar really should be proud of themselves.

A good time was had by all!

Re: Pixar's Up - MiceChat Reviews!

Just got back from seeing it in 3D, and right now this is certainly one of my favorites from Pixar.

Up is probably the most zany of the Pixar films, but it still captures the charm and emotions Pixar knows how to deliver.

Comedy-wise, there are plenty of great moments. There are plenty of sight gags and Dug delivers a dark humor joke that I never thought Pixar would do. Though the best moments came from just the daily routines of the characters, from Russel's non-stop jabber to Kevin's acknowledgement of the other characters. Though I will admit the nod to Star Wars really cracked me up. (Note- The nod wasn't the one in the credits, but near the end of the film.)

As for the 3D, I thought they did a good job. They focused more on sheer depth over the gimmicky "Pop everything out of the screen really fast." that other films are going for.

Oh yes, I do have a question for anyone else that has seen this in 3D. Did anyone see the new Pixar short? For some reason it didn't play in my theater. :/

I was wondering the same thing, how's the short? It's possible that it's not playing with the 3D version of the film.

Hmmm..this is turning out to be quite strange, talking with a couple friends they attended a 3D showing and were given the short. Could it possibly be based on theaters? I know that some theaters are showing the Toy Story 3 teaser and some arn't.

As I mentioned on the first page of thread Peter Sohn's 'Partly Cloudy' is wonderful, really lovely. The story is terrific and very dreamlike and slapsticky at the same time. The 3D brings out the subtle beauty of the colors and their richness.

It was scheduled to hit iTunes today.

Re: Pixar's Up - MiceChat Reviews!

I am still surprised how adult the film is!
Spoiler
I mean, Russel hinted that he has an astranged father and hasn't fully adjusted to his dad re-marrying!!
Talk about a curve ball I wasn't expecting!

And I loved anything involving the dogs!! The tribute to the poker painting had me laughing so loud, I would have been embarassed. And "The Cone of Shame" felt so appropriate, because that's how I always felt the dogs must be thinking when they have to wear it in real life. Poor things.

BTW, Did anyone who did see 'Partly Cloudy' feel very uncomfortable during the part of the montage where Ellie & Carl finds out they can't have kids?

No. It was a sad moment, but I never felt uncomfortable.

I caught this too! I live in the Bay Area and used to go to Fentons all the time.

I thought UP was a fantastic movie, it's great to see Pixar constantly maintaining such a high level of quality in each of their films. Partly Cloudy looked amazing and was probably my favorite short along with Lifted and Presto.
