Most underrated Disney films of all time

Well, the title pretty much explains it all. Let's face it, there are some fantastic Disney movies out there that are extremely underrated. They are fantastic films, but didn't get well-received by the general public. So, what do you think? (Note: Prefurably ANIMATED films)

Treasure Planet is my choice. The movie came out when I was in 4th grade. I remember seeing the trailer for it, and I was amazed. I really wanted to see it, but never got the chance, so I just bought it when it came out. Today, it is one of my favorite Disney movies, and I really don't understand why it is so underrated. It is full of Disney flavor. Too bad it wasn't a success. If it was, we may be seeing a Treause Planet ride in Tomorrowland.

Treasure Planet was neat to watch and the music was fun. I think each movie has it's own vibe. Atlantis was GORGEOUS, but I wish they had taken risks with the style of Atlantis itself. Plus comic book nerds did that movie. I always want to say Black Cauldron, but I just recently watched that.... that's really not good.

I almost forgot about A Goofy Movie. That movie was fantastic! It was pretty 90's, pretty much because of the music. That is probably one of the Disney movies that I have watched the most. I have seen most of the animated Disney movies, but not in a long time. When I was little I went to a babysitter, and they basically had all of the movies in the Disney animated canon. I got a good dose of them. That's probably why I like Disneyland so much.

I agree with A Goofy Movie and The Emperor's New Groove.

These two are my all-time favorite Disney movies.

Re: Most underrated Disney films of all time

In no particular order:

-The Hunchback of Notre Dame - a movie I hated upon first viewing, but something about it brought me back to the theater a total of FOUR TIMES. It really is an amazing animated feature. It's dark and will get discredit for that, but love it just being what it is.

-Pocahontas - the only modern Disney animated film that I didn't see in the theater, it got a lot of bad rap for not being as funny or entertaining as Lion King. Historical inaccuracies aside, the music is beautiful and the story about races and love is a good one.

-Atlantis: The Lost Empire - it maybe suffers from having too large of a cast for the filmmakers to properly handle, but I was incredibly entertained multiple times. It really is epic.

-The Emperor's New Groove - it's so funny!

p.s.
Treasure Planet... not a favorite of mine. I like some aspects of it but it's still too weird for its own good. And who did the character design for Scroop? Can he look less evil? Talk about predictable.

I think it would have been more successful if they did the original story.

Re: Most underrated Disney films of all time

Do we have to list movies that are actually good, or just forgotten?

JK

I just wanted to add, Return To OZ. This movie had so many things going for it but somehow didn't do well. The production design, score, plot, even the acting was top notch.

One Disney movie that is getting close to cult status would have to be Something Wicked This Way Comes. While not my favorite bit of filmmaking, it was an intersting look at the films Disney was making pre-Touchstone.

Can anyone tell I'm a movie nut??

Re: Most underrated Disney films of all time

I definitely agree A Goofy Movie was a surprise for me when I first saw it. I should watch it again today to see if it's still as entertaining.

Sorry, I know I've posted this here before, but I can't get past Hunchback of Notre Dame's Hellfire scene being in a Disney movie. I'll take the Charles Laughton version instead, which Disney seems to have taken much inspiration from anyway, and Maureen O'Hara as Esmeralda, whose voice never took me out of the film iike hearing Demi Moore's voice did.

I agree, It was nothing like the TV series Goof trope, which I think was a Good thing. I Can't remember if I saw it in theatres but I still have the VHS copy along with a few McDonalds toys. I loved that movie as a kid.

Though it may seem similar, forgotten is one thing, underrated is something that is actually good but never found the proper appreciation either by the company or by the mass audience. Rescuers Down Under is a good example of this. It's a decent / above average picture that came between Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast... and yet... nobody ever knew it was there.

And Return to Oz is actually pretty good in my opinion. It's not the best but it's watchable and still kinda freaky.

In the live action realm,

THE ROCKETEER

DICK TRACY

Not very good box office performers but I love them both.

Rescuers Down Under was another great underappreciated movie with an excellent score. Also interesting to note that this was Disney's first sequel.

THE ROCKETEER In my opinion is a classic didn't it win an oscar for effects or something?

DICK TRACY is another awesome film, I don't know why that one didn't make a splash. Too bad to, Disney would have made some incredible theme park rides.

Re: Most underrated Disney films of all time

Tracy was a hit for sure, just not as big as Batman the year before.

It's on my list plus:

The Rocketeer
The Sword and the Rose
Something Wicked This Way Comes
The Great Mouse Detective (most underrated of all DACs IMO)
Treasure Planet
The Rescuers Down Under
Return to Oz
Candleshoe
Newsies (doesn't deserve the crap it gets)
The Emperor's New Groove (though since it's release it's found an audience for sure)
