Great. You personally. I don't have Monsters Inc.
So now describe to me how $32 is a rip-off for me.

And dude. HVDs aren't going to come out till 2016 at the earliest. Buying Blu-Rays will not be any sort of waste of money. Relax.

Re: UP DVD Release, DVD Collection, and DVD vs. Blu-Ray

It's up to the individual to determine the value of money spent for products, so to you $32 for one movie you may already own, and one you don't may not seem like a waste of money to you, but economic trends would indicate that the general market is loosing it's taste for 'high dollar' non essential items. Blue ray has yet to really catch on, and most likely only reach a niche status (ala Laserdisc) because for most people it's only an expensive incremental upgrade from DVD, that does not justify the cost.

Re: UP DVD Release, DVD Collection, and DVD vs. Blu-Ray

Like John, I haven't paid more than $20 for a Blu Ray (and that was for Nightmare Before Christmas). In fact, I REFUSE to pay more than that for anything.

I got Snow White for $10, Hairspray for $13, Up/Monsters Inc for $32 (combined), etc.

If your willing to do some research you can find the great deals (which for the most part aren't in your local store).

In 1997 DVD was just an expensive upgrade to VHS. "Oh all it is is a VHS movie on a CD-looking thing... it'll never catch on"
Now, in 2007 Blu-Ray comes out as just an expensive upgrade to DVD. "Oh it's just an upgraded form of DVDs... it'll never catch on"

Just like DVDs never caught on, Blu-Rays will probably never catch on as well. You're probably right.
VHS for the win.

Re: UP DVD Release, DVD Collection, and DVD vs. Blu-Ray

In the 80s-90s, VHS cost between $16-20.

In 1999, a Disney DVD that considered interactive menus as a bonus feature cost $29.99. They dropped to $19.99 eventually.

My recent purchase of Up AND Monsters, Inc. was $32, which is $16 each.

My Snow White was a bit more expensive at $30 because I bought the super deluxe version that came with a small hardback book.

The other Disney DVDs I've bought were also well priced. There's still a few that I'm missing though: Bolt, Bug's Life... as I'm waiting for better deals on those as well.

Point is, it's not really a "cost" issue anymore. But I'm probably not the right person to talk to when it comes to cost. I used to be an avid Laserdisc purchaser and if anyone is old enough to remember those days, you were lucky to get a movie at $30. I remember buying the super good quality Jurassic Park for $60. My reason for doing so was for two reasons: 1) widescreen; 2) quality. You can get #1 on DVD no problem, but it's not the best quality anymore. After seeing the difference, I couldn't go back.

Re: UP DVD Release, DVD Collection, and DVD vs. Blu-Ray

just saw Up for the first time on the plane over last night. I won't be buying either version.

The combo packs are just ways to raise the average selling price. Disney is already super controlling on their pricing.

Sir Clinks, where did you pay $10 for SWhite? Or are you counting in some coupon deal or something?

Raise the average selling price?
From $20 to $20? What an increase.

Yes, if you buy it directly from Disney you're going to be spending way too much money. But when Amazon is selling it for the same price if not cheaper than the plain old DVD by itself. Why not go with the combo pack?

Have you compared where Disney sells DVDs vs other people? How can Disney keep DVD sales prices up.. with BluRay prices coming down? You add 'value' to the DVD kit so you ensure DVD purchases are still at a higher price.

The combo pack keeps DVD-only sales prices UP.

I'm not quite sure what the issue is.
I was saying that on Amazon, there is no price difference between regular DVD prices and the 4-disc combo pack.
But yeah, if you're buying your movies directly from Disney, you're going to be forking out a lot of money for them.

And that is by design. If it were a DVD-only pack, the pricing expectation would be even LOWER. By making the combo pack, Disney can pull in more money from DVD-only purchasers vs. pricing expectations for DVD-only packs.

Disney is doing this to keep their ASP high.

I'm still confused.
If we're talking about Disney's prices then I get it.
If we're talking about Amazon's prices, I don't get it, because, everything on Amazon is priced the same. So I don't see how one price could drive up the sales of another price.
I just don't completely get what you're saying, it's worded very awkwardly.
Anyone else care to explain?
