Your Favourite Indie/Foreign Films?

I much prefer foreign or indie films to the crap that Hollywood usually churns out. They're usually more thought provoking, insightful, and artsy (although too artsy can be bad). What are your favourite non-Hollywood movies?

I love:
-The Squid and the Whale
-American Dreamz
-Shake Hands with the Devil (a Canadian documentry about the journey of General Roméo Dallaire in Rwanda during the genocide)
-Little Miss Sunshine (Yes, a little cliché, but I still love it)
-Amélie (again, cliché, but whatever)
-C.R.A.Z.Y

The Station Agent

Not sure if it's indie or not, but it was the first indie-type movie that came to mind.....

Re: Your Favourite Indie/Foreign Films?

La Femme Nikita rocks!

Anything by Akira Kurosawa - but especially The Seven Samurai

Old German flicks have a special place in my heart, like The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari or the old Fritz Lang silent masterpieces.

Newer foreign - Wings of Desire is a few years old now but so excellent.
Pedro Almodovar is an excellent Spanish director and his early films are very racy and hilarious.

And I really like Pan's Labyrinth.

I'm not a big film person, I leave that to one of my roommates. So with that I'll just say: Run Lola Run.

Re: Your Favourite Indie/Foreign Films?

without a doubt my all time fave is Wim Winders' Until The End Of The World, which also has what i consider one of the greatest movie soundtracks ever made.

i'm also a huge fan of El Mariachi, its just so brilliantly done

Re: Your Favourite Indie/Foreign Films?

Remembering them all and composing a list would take a long time. Both Victoria and I devour indie films. Many are dreadful. Some are gems. A few gems that quickly come to mind:

Hear My Song
Waking Ned Devine
Calendar Girls
Big Night
Billy Elliott
Kinky Boots
Everything Is Illuminated

Re: Your Favourite Indie/Foreign Films?

I have a huge love for Kevin Smith movies (they're indie right?). So my top indie films are all by him.
1.)Dogma-I love it! I can watch it soooo many times.
2.)Clerks 2-Great movie. I love Randall!
3.) Chasing Amy
4.)Full Monty- first rated R movie I saw (and I was 16! The scandal!)
5.) My Big Fat Greek Wedding-so sweet!
6.) Imagine me and you
I have more... just not thinking right now.

My roommate made me see "Old Boy." Now that movie for days haunted me. Just... I couldn't get those images out of my head. But having said that when I tell my brother or my brothers friends I've seen it, I get cool cred. So in some sick way I like the fact that I saw that movie.

My favorite foreign film and one of my absolute favorite movies is Les Choristes. The music in it is absolutely incredible. My other two favorites are Amelie and Y Tu Mama Tambien.
