New Line taps Steers to drive '17'

High school comedy to star Zac Efron

Burr Steers (“Igby Goes Down”) has been tapped to direct New Line’s high school comedy “17,” starring Zac Efron.

Mini-major is fast-tracking “17,” with production beginning in December.

Jason Filardi script centers on a middle-aged father who wakes up to find he’s 17 again; he enrolls in the same high school as his two kids to be close to them.

Project reunites Efron with “Hairspray” director Adam Shankman, who’s producing with Jennifer Gibgot through their Offspring Entertainment.

“It’s been very important to Jennifer and I that we pair Zac with a director that has a truly original voice and style,” Shankman said.

Efron’s manager Jason Barrett will exec produce. New Line won the bidding for the project in February. Steers has shot episodes of “Big Love” and “Weeds.”

Matthew Perry will play a grown-up version of Zac Efron in "17," New Line's teen comedy being directed by Burr Steers. Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot are producing via their Offspring Entertainment banner.

In a scenario that turns the concept of "Big" on its head, the Jason Filardi-penned script follows a middle-age father who wakes up to find he's 17 again. In order to be close to his children, he enrolls in the same school as them.

Production begins early next month.

Efron was attached to star when the project was set up. Leslie Mann, who plays Perry's wife, came on board in October.

Perry (NBC's "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip") recently wrapped "The Laws of Motion," an indie drama also starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Hilary Swank and Ben Foster.

Duo Joins Zac Efron in '17'

Quote:
Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Melora Hardin (The Office) have joined the cast of 17, the New Line teen comedy starring High School Musical star Zac Efron. Burr Steers (Igby Goes Down) is directing from a Jason Filardi (Bringing Down the House) script. The story is about a middle-age father who wakes up to find he's 17 again and enrolls in the same school his children attend so he can get closer to them. Efron plays the teen version of the father while Matthew Perry has already been cast to play his adult counterpart. Leslie Mann has been cast to play Perry's wife. Trachtenberg will play Efron/Perry's daughter, who has a crush on the teen version of her own father. Hardin is the principal at the school.

Wasn't there a couple of stupid movies back in the 80 starring Kirk Cameron and Dudley Moore or George Burns or something regarding the exact same plot.

Looks like a bad move for up and coming Efron...

If those three example had the fanbase and the marketing of today twenty-plus years ago it'd be a different story and concern. Surrounding him with solid comedy players like Leslie Mann and Matthew Perry in a moderately-budgeted film seems like a pretty safe bet.
