Re: Yo Joe! G. I. Joe Live Action Movie

I'm very afraid because it's directed by Stephen Sommers.

Ray Park is excellent casting but.... JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT???? I'm very very afraid.

Dude, Cobra Commander wears a mask. Who cares who's under it. The voice and movements are more important.

Well first, his voice doesn't seem right either, which is what I immediately thought of. Think Treasure Planet. And he doesn't seem like a big build either... this will be interesting.

I just assumed that they'd use a Chris Latta impersonator for the voice.

Was Cobra Commander a big guy? He always seemed skinny / normal to me.

Joseph G-L was great in Brick. I don't like the idea that they're not making this American.

Based on a cast list, for a movie that isn't even filming yet, that's more than a year from release, you are predicting ruin?

They began production on February 18th here in Los Angeles.
There are some fine actors in the cast, especially Dennis Quaid and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, so high hopes to them.

...because I haven't seen any comic franchise in the last 15 years make a great transition. Batman was the only one and that already had lots of 'live action' exposure. X-men was borderline, but all the others have been pretty much crap if you were fans of the comics.

Then we have even the bigger stinkers.. like Doom.. Wing Commander... etc.

Transformers was an entertaining film, but might as well been just another storyline, because it did nothing for me to relate to my memories following the comics and even cartoons. GI Joe is likely to do the same.

And you know this because . . . ?

Look judging a comic book / cartoon based film on films similar films that came before is foolish.

Neither the writers or director of GIJoe have any previous comic / cartoon to film experience, so pre-judging this movie based on other films made by different production teams makes no sense.

Looking at the director, I'd say he has some good films (the Mummy movies) and some mediocre ones (Van Helsing). The writers fare better with the POTC films and some others that are pretty well thought of (30 Days of Night, Collateral).

Just based on that I'm willing to say there's a good chance this will be a fun film.

And since it looks like its going to be based more heavily on the cartoon, it shouldn't be a problem to transcend the source material. The cartoon was pretty awful for the most part. Fun when I was 8-10, but it mostly doesn't hold up well.

I never said I KNEW..

but lets look at reality here.

What environment exists today that is motivating this production to get green-lit. Answer: recent toy/comic->movie transitions

What do the producers have in common with previous films? Answer: oh look.. transformers!

What has fundamentally changed to say that this film will break from the box office success of its predecensors? Answer: nothing.. they are looking for the next cash cow

... except when this film stems from basically the same reasoning and including some of the same people (Brian Goldner) and the director has a pretty solid record of mediocre rehashs (the jungle book, huck fin movies) sans one successful franchise.
