"Johnny 5" is alive ... again!

'Short Circuit's' Johnny 5 still alive

Dimension acquires rights to remake 1986 film

By Michael Fleming
Variety
April 4, 2008

Quote:
Dimension Films is rewiring "Short Circuit," acquiring rights to remake the 1986 film.

The original introduced Number 5, a robot built by the military to be a highly sophisticated weapon. It developed a conscience and a personality after being hit by lightning, and then needed the help of humans after it was targeted for destruction by its makers, once it became a peacenik.

S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock, who created the characters and wrote both "Short Circuit" films, have been hired to write the remake. David Foster and Ryan E. Heppe will produce with John Hyde.

Deal was made by Dimension co-chairman Bob Weinstein, who called "Short Circuit" a worthy addition to its family film slate.

Foster, who produced the original with his partner Lawrence Turman and son Gary Foster, said the film will be similar in theme to the original, but it will factor in advances in technology.

I think it's high time for me to rent Short Circuit. It's been far too long.

I loved the original as a kid. Watched it over and over again. It doesn't hold up all that well though. I wonder if they're counting on Wall-E to generate some interest in cute robots?

I always thought that Rex on Star Tours looked and sounded like Number 5. Just curious as to what others thought.

I love Short Circuit. It's one of my favorite movies from when I was little. And yes, the robot in the line for Star Tours definitely reminds me of Johnny 5.

I'm thinking this is definitely related to WALL-E, at least in some degree. I'm excited to hear more about this project as it progresses.

This should be...interesting. Hopefully a good job will be done. The only thing I REALLY insist they don't change too much is the actual robot design. It may have been the 80s, but Number 5 and his...er, family were among the coolest looking robots ever. I get goosebumps just thinking about it.

I remember Johnny 5's voice that's it. I remember going to the theater to watch it but I don't remember the movie. As long as Fisher Stevens is in it. He was hot back in the day.

Off topic: I have no interest in Wall E.

*bangs head against wall*

STOP. THE. REMAKES!!!

As much as I loved the first Short Cirtuit (I still have my ticket stub from when I saw it in the theatre), I hated the sequel. This should NOT be tampered with. Ugh.

YAY! I'm interested to see what they can make of it, although I might have a little hard time not hearing the original voice.
