Okay so I know I've already started a thread for this but it has been closed. Also I don't think that many people read it since I did not state what the thread was about in the title.
So here's the news so far:
A while ago Jason Bateman had an interview, and discussed that talks were being made with the cast for a movie.
In early March, IMDB listed the movie as announced.
Here is a supposed script, but I believe it is fan work. Either way it's fairly well written, though I have discovered problems with the plot.
Quote:
So I had the distinct pleasure of meeting one Mitchell Hurwitz the other night and while he doesn't yet have an official draft of the script for AD he did let me read his initial overview of the film and then spoke with me about the basic ideas he has planned for the movie. The conversation lasted several hours while I was reading his notes and overview so I may have a few details wrong but here is what I remember.
First, the movie takes place in 2009. Six years after the show concluded. The film; like the show revolves around the family's every day activities in the same pseudo-documentary film style. The joke is the AD movie we're all looking forward to watching is actually footage being recorded by a "low budget" camera crew as a DVD feature for the film "Meet the Bluths" which is the Ron Howard project proposed by Maeby after the movie studio she worked for discovered she was just a teenager. The film was to feature an all star ensemble cast portraying the dysfunctional family in their everyday lives. Early production on "Meet the Bluths" was rocky at best, with several drafts of the script being written and rewritten to the point where nobody really knows if the film is supposed to be a serious documentary or a comedic masterpiece. Still the early buzz was positive until production was halted. For Tobias it seems had already sold the rights to their story to a poorly narrated television series called "Scandal Makers" causing development on "Meet the Bluths" to be stalled. Or shall we say "Arrested" due to the ongoing lawsuit between Tantamount Studio's and the makers of "Scandal Makers." As luck would have it attorney J. Walter Weatherman is currently representing the production company for "Scandal Makers" while Maeby's studio hired the infamous Barry Zuckerkorn. All because they had heard he was "very good" Mr. Zuckerkorn also represents the Bluths at the insistence of Lucille who has spent the last 6 years in prison. All the while having a secret affair with Warden Gentles and drifting apart from George Sr. emotionally. Lucille's absence would have been hard on Buster had he been around for it. But Buster instead spent the last 6 years serving multiple tours in Iraq. Yet due to one unfortunate incident involving both of his prosthetic hands being blown off. He had won his first purple heart and a ticket back home where he now tries desperately to connect with his father. To his credit Buster did sustain multiple other injuries on his tour. Many of which will be seen in a hilarious photo collage. Though none of them quite as serious.
The lawsuit of course caused Tobias to be featured as the main character of yet another "Scandal Makers" episode in which he was again portrayed by Dave Attell. Which seemed a little odd to everyone since Mr. Attell was also rumored to portray Tobias in "Meet The Bluths" should it ever be made. The role of George Bluth was cut out in editing due to poor acting. Tobias was devastated. To make a long story short, while the matter of who really owns the rights to the film is stalled in litigation Maeby (who now an adult no longer has to hide her professional life) arranged for the "low budget" camera crew to film their every move for the DVD as a way to salvage lost time until the film can be made. Michael Bluth, proud of the fact that Maeby is working harder than her mother Lindsay ever has; decides to help his niece out by selling the rights to Mr. Bananagrabber (a cartoon character Gob invented) to her studio at a seemingly discounted rate. The character was then made into a series of low budget Korean animated films which made its Korean filmmaker (Annyong) rich beyond his wildest dreams. However the small payment Michael received for the film creates a rift between him and Gob who years ago all too quickly gave Michael animation rights. Gob fakes a sense of entitlement to the money due mostly to mounting pressure from his wife (Amy Poehler) who is back in his life and pushing Gob toward having kids and buying a house. Gob of course wants nothing of the sort, but refuses to give Michael the satisfaction of knowing he wants out of his marriage. Michael instead uses the money to start development on their housing track. George Sr. itching to get back in the office and clear his very guilty wife's name has spent the last 6 years stuck at home to maintain the public perception that he is retired. Which of course is not true. George Sr. befriends a group of tough guy construction workers (one of whom named Trevor is apparently gay) who take their all too frequent breaks in the model home. This makes it more difficult to show the home to prospective buyers. So George Sr. with the help of his new found friends finds a way to help move the business forward at the ground level. By building a detached "break room" addition to the house for the workers. Like a small house of their own.
Lindsay meanwhile is still having troubles with Tobias (who you will remember is devastated) and they decide to give couples therapy another shot. This time however the therapist is played by Ellen de Generous who in real life is set to marry Portia de Rossi (Lindsay) this summer. Their first session goes well with the therapist suggesting one of them is hiding their true identity and surrendering to failure. This inspires Tobias to get serious about his acting dreams and hire an agent. Unfortunately he of course hires Carl Weathers who convinces him to audition for a voice acting role in the English version of "Mr. Bananagrabber and the quest for chocolate nuts." Tobias then spends much of the film practicing his lines which almost always involve nuts. How much he loves nuts and how he wants some chocolate nuts on his face. But really it was Lindsay who the therapist feels is hiding her true self and so she encourages Lindsay to experiment with her sexuality. This makes perfect sense to Lindsay but her first attempt lands her in a hotel room with a transvestite named Bambi. Having realized her mistake she leaves in disgust and embarrassment. Shortly after Bambi gets a call from Barry Zuckerkorn. Cue image of a shady rest stop. The next morning Michael goes to visit his mother in prison to find she is enjoying it a little too much. He informs her about the situation with Gob which she sees as a sign that Gob is finally growing up. She then tells Michael he should give Gob one of the houses they're building. Shortly after Berry shows up smelling of "Brute" to inform Michael that the court is willing to let his mother out of jail for one day this weekend to attend Busters purple heart award ceremony and Michael reluctantly pays the required fines believing the positive press it creates will benefit the barely on track company's public perception. Upon returning to the model home, Michael shares the news about Gob with his adopted sister Lindsay and expects her to agree giving Gob his own house would be a bad idea! Lindsay instead believes Gob is more mature than he's given credit for and accuses Michael of not wanting to help because he likes being the only brother with a stable lifestyle. Buster than informs Lindsay (who he now calls "Adopted Older Sister") that "Mother" will be out to attend his award ceremony and is thrilled about it. Having two hooks for hands he is completely unable to function. Dropping cups and breaking everything he touches. There are literally scratches all over the walls from his two hooks. Lindsay of course bemoans the idea of her mother being out of prison if even for only one day. And tells Michael she has a date this weekend and can't attend.
For you see a few minutes earlier Trevor the construction worker had complimented Lindsay on her outfit and she decided to give men another shot. Specifically Trevor, who acts an awful lot like a woman. Unbeknown to Lindsay Tobias had a similar encounter with Trevor the day before which resulted in an hours long discussion about the subtle mannerisms and raw power that is George Sr, how Tobias was devastated for having lost George Sr. (the part in scandal makers) and how George Sr. (again, the part) was all he had in life. A few days later the appearance of a "love letter" signed by Trevor causes Lindsay to think things are about to heat up. Meanwhile home from college George Michael makes a shocking discovery while cleaning out his closet. Having married his cousin Maeby 6 years prior the two dismissed the very real marriage license they received due to the fact that they were both under 18 and it was invalid. Or so they thought. Since then George Michael had hidden the now framed marriage license and only now discovered it carries a very troubling typo. Instead of the year of their marriage being listed as 2003 it says 2008, making the upcoming weekend George Michael and Maeby's first anniversary as a married couple. George Michael attempts to discuss the matter with his father who is having a discussion with his brother Gob. Michael tells Gob that marriage is a wonderful thing that shouldn't be taken lightly and if he's truly ready to grow up and settle down with a family he cannot say no that. George Michael overhearing this decides he too is ready to grow up and start a family of his own with his cousin Maeby. Remember, they're not really cousins. Michael not having the Mr. Bananagrabber money anymore decides the new detached "break room house" his father had constructed right next door to the model home without consulting him is Gobs until he can afford to buy one for himself. Gob is happy and vows to treat it with the respect and dignity of a 4 star hotel. And even dubs it "Hermano Manner" which Gob believes translates into the "The Brother Hotel" wanting something hipper he shortens it to "The Brothel." Micheal insists he simply call it "Gob's House" but Gob won't have any of it. Michaels new plans are not taken well by George Sr. who had planned to use "The Brothel" (as he too has taken to calling it) as a remote office from which he could run the business when the construction workers finish the lot. So George Sr. devises a plan to burn "The Brothel" to the ground and asks Trevor to meet him there the night of the Busters award ceremony. Trevor of course thinks this is George Sr.'s response to the Love Letter he'd sent and Lindsay mistakenly thought was for her. Gob meanwhile checks out his new home which due to its size and layout is very much like a 4 star hotel room, minus the furniture of course. Gob realizing he's "made a huge mistake" and accuses Michael of screwing him over by giving him what he calls a "fancy garage" for him as and his wife to live in. Michael tells Gob that it's only temporary, not any worse than living on a boat and a strong marriage can overcome anything. Which gives Gib and idea to scare his wife away by introducing her to his son the now 26 year old Army Private Steve Holt, in the hopes that the idea of them living together as a family in their very small and still unfurnished home would scare her away. However Steve and Gob's wife immediately fall for each other. Both loving a good dare, and technically unrelated it's truly love at first sight. So they begin a secret affair which is accidentally witnessed by George Michael who later inadvertently tells Maeby. Maeby somewhat jealous that Steve Holt is with "her" is mostly disturbed by the news of this mother/stepson love. But eventually figures if it's okay than what her and George Michael almost had all those years ago should be as well. And so once again Maeby starts to see her older not-cousin as something more.
I can't remember some of the finer details in between but it all comes together at the party before Busters award ceremony held at the model home so as to increase media exposure of the new houses being completed on the lot. Gob having set up a romantic dinner in his new barely furnished home (he was only able to steal the model homes table, chairs and couch) realizes he forgot to cook a meal. After a failed attempt to use the "Corn Baller" he decides to run to the best take out place in the O.C. Meanwhile inside the model home, George Sr. secretly hands Trevor a note and walks away. Trevor reads it just as Lindsay approaches. Before she can say anything meaningful Trevor completely love struck inadvertently hands Lindsay the note while heading out to "The Brothel" believing the candles and wine Gob had set up were put there by George Sr. Lindsay meanwhile reads the note Trevor handed her which says "Meet me in The Brothel in 5 mins" Thinking the note is for her she soon heads out toward the "The Brothel" as well. The exchange is witnessed by Tobias who digs the note out of the trash can and is once again devastated. This time however he decides to do something about it. So he goes to Michael for advice who is just now noticing the couch and table are missing presumably to make room for the award ceremony. Michael tells Tobias that if you want a marriage to work sometimes you just have to fight for it. And that he should take Gob as an example. Tobias takes that as his cue to to fight for his lady and heads out to "The Brothel" where Linsay and Trevor are already having an awkward conversation by candle light. It is at that point when Michael sees Gob digging through the refrigerator having realized the best take out in the O.C. (don't call it that) was shut down for having the biggest rats in the O.C. (don't call it that) and he needs food for his romantic evening at home. Michael recalling his conversation with Tobias realizes Gob might currently have some unwelcome guests and the two head out toward "The Brothel"
George Michael and Maeby, having reignited their awkward, silent, mutual attraction for each other are staring awkwardly across the room at one another. George Michael unsure if he should tell Maeby tonight is their first anniversary as a married couple. And Maeby unsure if she should tell George Michael how she feels. Lindsay meanwhile is being let down easily by Trevor who was not at all interested in her. Just then Tobias storms in holding the note George Sr. had written, notices the candles and wine Gob had previously set up and gets furious. Tobias tackles Trevor to the ground and Trevor thinking Tobias is also in love with George Sr. decides to fight back. As Tobias is finally discovering "the man inside" of him, Lindsay rediscovers the man she married and begins cheering him on. And the two men scuffle for several minutes completely unaware they are fighting over two very different love interests. Gob and Michael appear on the scene just in time to see Tobias smash the bottle of wine over Trevors head causing Trveor to fall on top of Lindsay. At that moment George Sr. who was outside soaking "The Brothel" in gasoline comes in and immediately thinks Trevor is violating his little girl. Upset that Trevor betrayed his friendship George Sr. throws Trevor out and concedes to let Gob have "The Brothel" the family then goes back into the model home to watch Busters award ceremony which is about to start. Meanwhile inside the model home Maeby notices Steve Holt and Gob's Wife whispering in each others ear and decides she's going to make a move on George Michael. George Michael and Maeby meet up in the kitchen and both blurt out "we have to talk" so the kids search out the only place they believe they could speak privately and head out to the still romantically lit and gasoline soaked "Brothel" next door. It is here the two finally express their feelings for one another. When George Michael brings up the marriage license, the two begin to make out on the table knocking over the still lit candles. Which turns out to be a really bad idea.
On the next Arrested Development Movie...
Inside the model home Buster is receiving his purple heart, when Gob's wife and son both recognize him from their own army days and expose him as a liar who lost both his hands to a seal years earlier. At that moment a giant fireball flashes outside the window engulfing "The Brothel" in flames as well as the side of the Model Home causing the sort of dangerous spectacle Michael Bluth has come to expect from his family get togethers. Luckily the kids were safe but ran from the scene swearing to never speak of the incident again. Michael vows to rebuild, and assures his brother he will have a real home next time. But Gob uses his wife's willingness to expose Buster as an excuse to get a divorce. Meanwhile her and Steve Holt sneak off unnoticed in the background. Tantamount Studio's loses its lawsuit but decides this "low budget" DVD footage would make a far better and cheaper movie. Gob is later presented with an offer to make his own children's television series based on the hard knock life of his puppet Franklin. And you guessed it, it's a musical. Finally after a week long investigation the Fire Marshall reveals it was actually the Corn Baller which Gob had left on, that burned down The Model Home. And Michael needing his parents signatures to collect the insurance money has no idea where the reunited Bluth's have disappeared too. |
I'll update when I find news on the subject.
