Lawrence Kasdan to pen 'Robotech'

Big-screen adaptation of the anime classic

Veteran screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan has been hired to write "Robotech," Warner Bros.' adaptation of the anime classic.

Additionally, Akiva Goldsman and Chuck Roven are boarding the project as producers, joining Tobey Maguire and Drew Crevello.

"Robotech" was a 1980s cartoon series from Harmony Gold USA and Tatsunoko Prods. It was re-edited and re-dialogued to combine three Japanese anime series to give the producers enough episodes to air as a daily syndicated series.

A sprawling sci-fi epic, "Robotech" takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion centers on a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's hope for survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

Frank Agrama of rights-holder Harmony Gold will exec produce as will Jason Netter.

Crevello and Maguire brought the project to Warners in September.

Matt Reilly and Matt Milam overseeing for Warners.

"Robotech" extends Kasdan's return to the fantasy genre that began last year when he was tapped to pen the "Clash of the Titans" remake for Warners and Thunder Road. Kasdan wrote the screenplays for "Return of the Jedi," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Raiders of the Lost Ark" before penning such works as "The Big Chill" and "Grand Canyon."

He is repped by CAA.
This should be interesting.

By the way, anyone notice that blurb about Kasdan doing a remake of Clash of the Titans too? Eventually, all movies will be remakes!

So why didn't he write Indy 4 if he is still working?

It's my understanding that he did do a little consulting with David Koepp on dialogue between Indy and Marion, but seeing as how he's a very successful writer-director in his own right, he very likely had his own projects to deal with and wasn't really interested (if he was even asked) in Indy 4. Keep in mind that he only wrote the first film's screenplay (as well as The Empire Strikes Back) as a hired hand because George Lucas can't write worth a hill of beans. Kasdan wasn't involved in Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade at all. Also, Spielberg, Lucas, and Ford had rejected writer Jeb Stuart's, writer-director Frank Darabont's, writer-director M. Night Shyamalan's, and writer-director Chris Columbus' Indy 4 screenplays as well.

I thought Shyamalan was only asked to write a script for Indy 4, I thought he never actually wrote an Indy 4 script.

Veritech fighters should look awesome in live action. Look at how they made Transformers "transform" from vehicle to robot and vice versa, and how cool it looked in the live action version. I can't wait for this!
