Kevin Smith's upcoming comedy Zack and Miri Make a Porno, with Elizabeth Banks and Seth Rogen, may actually be a porno. No, seriously. The MPAA is trying to slap it with an NC-17 rating, meaning you'd have a tough time seeing it down at the megaplex.
So what's in this thing that makes it so, like, porny? We asked Seth, and here's what he said...
"It's like a romantic comedy," Rogen told us this week, at the press day for The Pineapple Express, which opens in August. "It's a romantic relationship movie—with a lot of porn and balls."

Best line in the article I have to agree with....

"You can disembowel someone in a youth hostel in Romania, but you can't show people having sex," Rogen said. "I think it's weird."

America needs to start allowing NC-17 movies into the multiplexes. NC-17 does not equal porn. NC-17 movies are just movies with too much extreme violence or extreme sex for the MPAA to feel comfortable with giving the film an R-rating. The MPAA's logic in the difference between R and NC-17 is very flawed though. The indie horror film, Hatchet had to be heavily edited to get by with an R rating, I saw the uncut version on DVD, R rated cuts of films like Hostel: Part II are far worse. Hatchet was more in the style of the 80s slashers, were there was gore, but it wasn't very disturbing. Films like Hostel have distrubing sequences of tortue in them. In foreign countries films with the equilvalent rating of NC-17 get very wide releases.

I have less of a problem with a film getting an R or NC-17 rating than EVERY film getting a PG-13 as most films seem to get now-a-days, even though some might be pretty tame while others might have violence and raunch more befitting of an R.

The film makers are more P-O'd because they stand less likely to make money if the film is an NC-17 (or even and R)... even if more multiplexes were willing to show them. When the NC-17 rating was created it was general public who decided not to go see them. Multiplexes got the message loud and clear, because they can't afford to have movies playing to empty houses.

Look at the biggest money makers, most are G or PG (think Disney and other family fair).

I personally have less of a problem with with blood and gore in a film (though I'm not a fan) than unnecessary sex in a film.

Usually the biggest money makers are PG-13 films. This is because adults generally feel comfortable taking their kids to them, while teenagers will think (because of the rating) that a PG-13 film isn't a kids movie.
I have major problems with the MPAA rating system. For example, Indiana Jones 4 is a mild, kid friendly movie and Beowulf is an extremely violent and bloody 300 style movie with no real sex, but sex is heavily involved in the plot. Films like Enchanted and Happy Feet shouldn't be PG, they are perfectly suitable for all ages. I think PG-13 should be used for films that really push the boundaries of what a PG meant in the early 1980s. Instead PG-13 films are basically equal to a PG in the early 1980s, and a PG nowdays is equal to a G film in the early 1980s.

There is a Japanese film called Visitor Q, even though this film got the rarely given out R-18 rating in it's native Japan (keep in mind that Sin City is R-15 in Japan and Kill Bill Vol. 2 is PG-12 in Japan, so they are much more lenient that the MPAA generally), the film got by with an R in America. Visitor Q is 90 minues of extreme and sometimes very disturbing and graphic perversity, often of a sexual manner. I would feel more comfortable watching the uncut version of Ichi the Killer with kids, over Visitor Q. If Visitor Q wasn't rated NC-17, while an uncut version of Saw with 3 more seconds of gore is worthy of an NC-17 by their standards, than the MPAA is full of crap.

One of the reasons this double standard exists is because violence is easier to explain to kids than sex. Violence is a fairly easy idea to understand. Violence in some form is at the core of many games (and video games) children play. Sex on the other hand is a completely foreign idea to kids, they generally aren't exposed to it in any forms outside of movies. One problem I have is with the MPAA is that they seem more comfortable with perverse and unusual sex than they are with more normal sex. The film Vistor Q is a good example again. READER DISCRETION IS STRONGLY ADVISED, as I'm about to describe a very perverse and disgusting sexual act from the filme:

yet the film got by with an R rating, while regular sex can get an NC-17 for things such as showing too many thrusts per minute.
