Yeah, I gotta go with Aimster on this one.

There is no way anybody can ever do a better version of that song than Lennon.

KMFDM did a cover of Material Girl that actually makes Madonna listenable. That and I think it was a brilliant move for a (then) all male band to not change the gender of the lyrics.

I love Amiina, I saw them open up for Sigur Ros. Their version of Dr. Finkelstein is beautiful. Gotta love a girl group that uses a saw as a musical instrument. They are the reason for my purchase of Nightmare Revisited.

If you like good cover albums check out Shaw-Blades. They do some excellent covers of great 60's & 70's tunes. It's Tommy Shaw from Styx & Jack Blades from Night Ranger.

That was what I was going to say.

Besides that...I love:

Your Song - Ewan McGregor. Not sure if it would be better than the Elton John version, but his voice makes me melt. John Barrowman's cover was also very good.

Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - John Barrowman. This version is more...danceable? I have no idea how you'd say it. The original is great, but I love John's version more.

Barry Manilow's .... (okay, stop giggling!) .... Barry Manilow's version of "My Kind of Town (Chicago Is).

I like Sinatra, but Manilow puts life into this song.

I could not agree with you more. That is Dolly's song. Period.

And how about another original, better than the possibly better known cover? I'll take Roy Orbison's original "Blue Bayou" over Linda Ronstadt any day.

Listening to it now, Johnny Cash's version of Rusty Cage is a lot better than the original, but maybe I'm bias since I love Cash and am not a huge fan of Soundgarden

Re: Cover songs done better

Here's one I can't believe no one mentioned yet:

I Heard It Through the Grapevine - Marvin Gaye

Gladys Knight and the Pips recorded it a year before Gaye did. Creedence Clearwater Revival also did an excellent cover.

One song, three distinct interpretations. All classics.
