![]() | Cover songs done better I was listening to Classic Rock on my Sirius today and they were playing "A Little Help From My Friends" by Joe Cocker. The DJ said that Sir Paul McCartney said that Cocker did a much better version than the Beatles did. I agree with Paul, I love Joe's version. That started me thinking about groups that remade original songs but there's were better. Here's a few I thought up, I'd like to see what everone else thinks. All Along the Watchtower: Bob Dylan/Jimi Hendrix Jimi flat out blows away Dylan's version. I could listen to that song all day. Little Wing: Jimi Hendrix/Stevie Ray Vaughn Hendrix couldn't have a song someone else did better right? Wrong, SRV's version was so clean and smooth - perfect guitar work. I Will Always Love You: Dolly Parton/Whitney Houston Dolly has a beautiful song but Whitney made it her own. BRilliant vocal work that few can match, didn't hurt having it in the soundtrack of a number one movie either. Hurt: Nine Inch Nails/Johnny Cash This one is debateable because both songs has different meaning for the lead singers. Nine Inch Nails wrote it for the pain inflicted from drug use, Cash did it for pain of getting old and close to death. Both VERY powerful songs, I prefer Johnny's version by a slight edge. Now what are your cover tunes done better? I hope y'all find this subject as interesting as I do. Chad |

![]() One song that I just adore is Landslide by Stevie Nicks. I'm impressed by both the Smashing Pumpkins & Dixie Chicks version of it but Stevie's is just amazing.

The Dick Dale and Stevie Ray Vaughn version of "Pipeline" is far superior to all previous versions, takes the song to his peak for me. I always kind of preferred the Beatles versions of "Rock and Roll Music" and "Roll Over Beethoven", but I wouldn't say they are completely better than the Chuck Berry originals. As big of a fan of Johnny Cash as I am, I prefer Hank Williams III's version of Cocaine Blues (which really isn't Cash's song either), it may be a case of because I heard it first, but I think he did it better with more edge. There's probably more, but I'm drawing a blank right now.

![]() | Re: Cover songs done better I hate to burst your bubble Chadmo but this subject was discussed before Song remakes you like My answers still remain the same. David Cook, the latest American Idol winner did a great version of Billie Jean. I wished he had it on his new CD.

![]() | Re: Cover songs done better Thought of another one... In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel/Jeffrey Gaines I love both songs but the acoustic version that Jeffrey Gaines sings is so soulful and smooth. I love that!

![]() | Re: Cover songs done better I like the soulful inflections of Jeffrey Gaines version, but it doesn't hold a candle to PG's 12" remix version, which featured a lot more of Yassou N'dour vocal. It seems to be the basis of Gaines arrangement. |
