What's "up" with the 'UP' sntrk? Disney says no CD's

It's true. Since UP is right around the corner, I thought I look up who did the music and if it's gonna be any good. To my delight, it's Michael Giacchino, who created wonderful scores for The Incredibles and Ratatouille.

Alright so first up, I check iTunes store. Partial album. 23 tracks. Each sold separately. Which means you pay $23 for what they have.

Huh?

Amazon. No listing for an actual cd, but some digging reveals that it's in the mp3 section only. 26 tracks for $8.99. The 3 tracks that aren't on itunes are "album only".

So what gives? I did some research and The Pixar Blog says this:
The Pixar Blog: Exclusive: No 'Up' soundtrack CD, Disney confirms

Quote:
Exclusive: No 'Up' soundtrack CD, Disney confirms

Ending weeks of speculation, a Disney spokesperson just confirmed that the soundtrack to Pixar's Up will be released by Walt Disney Records only as a digital download. No compact disc (CD) version will be sold.

Quite disappointing considering the beauty of the cover and other factors, such as Up being Pixar's tenth film.

As reported earlier, the soundtrack will become available for download on May 26.

I'm kinda bummed. I liked having a collection of Disney / Pixar albums, and amazon mp3 downloader does not work on my computer for whatever reason.

Curses.

I wonder why that is. Really prevents people from making that impulse buy in the parks since there is no CD available.

I mean, Digital is the future, but I would think even Disney would realize their fans would want a physical CD.

If you have to get it, I'd go with the Amazon page. I bought it just now and it's well worth the price on Amazon, even with the exclusive Skywalker Sound Effects Track.

For those that don't like spoilers from soundtracks, don't read the titles to the tracks. They give away major plot points.

But I love the old-timey sound during the beginning as well as the hints from The Incredibles towards the middle and end. And just like The Incredibles, the theme song for Up sounds so familiar because of how much nostalgia is evokes for a newly composed track. I can't wait to see how they will be used in the film!

Yah, i just did that on my laptop. And then emailed them all to myself to add to my computer with all my itunes. It's a pretty fun listen. The old swing sound of the 30s.

that's a really good point about the impulse buys. I wonder how well that music shop on main street actually does.

What they will probably do is sell the album as a card.

In Target, they have an entire rack of what they call "digital albums" which look like iTunes cards with the album art on the front instead of how much the card is worth. On the back is a code you type into a website that allows you to download the album after purchase.

I wouldn't be surprise if they do this with the Up soundtrack.

Control of the media. Music CDs are soooooo easy to pirate and manipulate in other ways, so the media companies view CDs as a loss of revenue, even if they're being used by responsible consumers in legitimate ways.

For example, I use GarageBand to create iPhone ringtones from CD tracks that I've ripped into MP3 files. I cannot use downloaded digital files that are protected, which applies to most if not all downloaded files. I have to use a physical CD in order to create those ringtones from unprotected MP3 files.

I would hate to see the physicial CD market disappear in favor of digital downloads, but this is most likely the future of media in general. Sucks.

^You just presented the cliff notes version of the arugement against DRM.

On paper, DRM works fine, but like you pointed out, it more often than nots bites honest consumers in the butt hard. The ones they put on music is NOTHING compared to the ones they put on video games and movies. Kind of makes it impossible for me to do any video editing exercises unless I have access to a media deck that is connected to a computer rather than to a TV.

This explains their decision to update (with music from UP) and release:
Disney Pixar Greatest [SOUNDTRACK]

Amazon.com: Disney Pixar Greatest: Thomas... Amazon.com: Disney Pixar Greatest: Thomas...

I saw that... but it's such a hodge podge of songs mixed with score... I don't known why anyone would pay for that one by itself.

Except its being sold through Amazon which has no DRM at all...

That's true of the Apple universe only. Even still.. DRM is fading under the pressure...

More likely is Disney looked at these more niche genres and said 'wow, wouldn't this be a safe area to start trying to go all digital'. Doing pressings and distribution for albums is expensive.. especially if it's a smaller genre.

It really maximizes margins since the music production was already done for the movie.. and now you can offload distribution to the music websites too.. now you get nice fat margins. Lower potential revenue per unit... but nice healthy margin.

It's a done deal.. just a matter of time. Unless the music industry wakes up and starts offering something really different. But they won't... they'll keep charging $18+ dollars for a disc and watch the music stores continue to fail and close. Their control of radio will continue to float them while their retail market evaporates.

Re: What's "up" with the 'UP' sntrk? Disney says no CD's

Digital downloads don't cost the company anything. CDs, while cheap to produce, do have a manufacturing and storing factor, plus the added 'embarassment' of seeing handfuls on the shelf that might not sell.
Disney and most media companies would like to see the market go totally digital download, no CDs and no DVDs (sales are dismal for both)
That way they don't spend a lot (if anything) making the product available, and they can try to control the DRM. They can restrict downloads, they can change the content on a whim and they can even limit how long it's usable to the buyer.
