BLOCKBUSTER film studio Disney is to shoot a multi-million pound new version of Alice in Wonderland in Plymouth.

Internationally acclaimed director Tim Burton will put his own unique stamp on the classic tale – and it is being heavily rumoured that Hollywood heart-throb Johnny Depp will star as the Mad Hatter.

And hundreds of Plymothians will have the chance to get themselves seen by an audience of millions on the silver screen by starring as extras in the film.

People are being invited to a casting event in Plymouth next week, where 250 extras will be chosen.

Shooting will take place in the city in September for two weeks, and the hunt is now on for extras to take part in scenes set in Victorian times.


The name of the Disney/Burton film has not been publicly confirmed. However, an industry source has told The Herald that it will be a major new adaptation of the timeless Lewis Carroll favourite.

The filming locations in the city also remain a closely guarded industry secret, but impressive historic properties like Saltram House, Mount Edgcumbe and the Royal William Yard are strong contenders.

The film, which is due for release in 2010, will be shown in 3-D, and has all the hallmarks of a massive box office hit.

Its director Tim Burton has already made his name on hit films, including Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Edward Scissorhands, which also starred A-listed Johnny Depp.

The pair have teamed up on numerous other major films, like the recent smash-hit Sweeney Todd. Australian newcomer Mia Wasikowska, will play the part of Alice.

The film's casting agents are coming to the New Continental Hotel, Plymouth, on Wednesday August 6 and Thursday August 7, between 10am and 6pm, auditioning for paid extras. There is a minimum age limit of 16.

Ilenka Jelowicki, who has cast for James Bond movie Casino Royale and is company director for Mad Dog, said: “We are looking for people above the age of 16 who have naturally coloured hair.

“We would prefer girls with long hair and men with natural styles. Extras will get to dress up in Victorian period costume, corsets and wigs and will have their make-up done.

“We would also like people whose work allows the flexibility of two weeks' worth of filming.

“Being an extra is not just about being a blur in the background, it can lead to fantastic opportunities. One of my extras has now gone on to produce his own film, and another went on to star in Hollyoaks for three years.

“There will be at least 100 crew on-set and it'll be a wonderful experience to be a part of a big movie. It'll be well-paid and hopefully a hugely enjoyable experience.

“It is definitely something to show your grandchildren.”

It will not be the first time Plymouth has been chosen to host A-listers and big-budget film crews.

Wow, how intriguing. Although, admittedly, I'm a bit worried. From what I've read about Alice in Wonderland, almost nobody has produced a movie version of it with any amount of success. They all come out weird and unliked, or so I've read. I know I've seen a few live action Alice in Wonderlands that were so weird I couldn't get through them. I think Disney was the closest one to get a good Alice film, and even then he ended up regretting making it because people just didn't sympathize Alice like they sympathized with Snow White and Cinderella.

However, this is Tim Burton we're talking about here, and he has an edge that's unlike any other director. Maybe that dark and creepy (but not offensively weird like the old Alice movies) will prove to be successful in making this movie. I hope so. I loved Alice in Wonderland and feel that it deserves another movie that actually does it justice, like the one Disney made over fifty years ago.

Tim's got a great fanbase that will support him 110% no matter what he does, and so does Johnny, so were looking at 220% success for this movie....If you thow Helena in there, well them the number is just silly.

Unless its 'Big Fish' & 'Planet of the Apes' or 'The Libertine', 'The Man Who Cried' or 'Before Night Falls', respectively.

The right main stream films from both rightfully receive huge support. Some works they do for themselves.

Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter?

Sounds brilliant -- and according to one very well-informed source, it's true.

Tim Burton's upcoming take on the classic Lewis Carroll fairy tale, Alice in Wonderland 3-D is slated for release in 2010.

The source reveals to EW.com that the film will be live action until Alice (played by Mia Wasikowska of HBO's In Treatment) jumps down the rabbit hole and meets the loopy tea party host.

The big question is whether Depp himself will don a Hatter outfit, or lend his voice to the computer-generated version.

Disney and Depp's camp won't confirm whether the actor is set to play the nefarious charmer. No matter. We already know Depp looks great in a hat.

LONDON -- Brit thesp Michael Sheen has joined Samuel L. Jackson on the thriller "Unthinkable"and will also appear in Tim Burton's re-imagining of classic children's story "Alice in Wonderland."

Thesp will also have a role in "Alice in Wonderland," in which Johnny Depp is playing the Mad Hatter.

Both pics are a change in direction for Sheen, who has made a name for himself playing real-life characters to critical acclaim. Sheen stars as British TV personality David Frost in Ron howard's upcoming "Frost/Nixon." He portrayed former British Prime Minister Tony Blair in "The Deal and "The Queen," both of which were directed by Stephen Frears.

Hollywood star Anne Hathaway is lined up to join Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter for director Tim Burton's adaptation of "Alice In Wonderland."

Hathaway is slated for the role of the White Queen opposite Bonham Carter's Red Queen, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Little-known Australian actress Mia Wasikowska has landed the lead role of Alice, while Depp will portray the Mad Hatter in pal Burton's take on the Lewis Carroll classic.

The film, which is due for release in 2010, will mix live action with animation and will be in 3D.
