'Cars 2' and the loss of Paul Newman

'Cars 2' Revs Its Engines, But Will It Move Forward With Paul Newman?

This piece ran a few of months back, You'd expect to hear an update soon from Pixar.
What's you're take on the loss of Doc Hudson?

Fifty plus years as an actor, 10 Academy Award nominations, one Oscar win, and a slew of indisputably iconic performances, and forgive me, my first thought upon hearing the recent news of Paul Newman’s rumored ill health was “Is ‘Cars’ really going to be his last acting role?”

Not if John Lasseter and the good folks over at Pixar have anything to do with it, who are hoping that Newman will continue the role of Doc Hudson in “Cars 2,” scheduled for release in 2012.
“Well, you know, his character is coming back,” Lasseter told MTV News. “He’s a good friend of mine, and so we’re just waiting to see.” Although some articles conflict, it was widely reported earlier this month that Newman was battling lung cancer.

As for the rest of the “Cars 2” gang, little is known about the story beyond the fact that it’s rumored to follow Lighting McQueen has he races his way across Europe. Lasseter himself confessed that there’s not much more to know in the moment, saying of the story that it was still in “early development.”

But for people who think it’s simply a cash grab (”Cars” products continue to be some of the highest-selling merchandise for parent company Disney), Lasseter has three words of rebuke: “Toy Story 2.”

“If you look at ‘Toy Story 2,’ which is one of the stories I’m most proud of in all the pantheon of Pixar films, it’s the same thing with ‘Cars 2.’ We’ve come up with a great, great story line,” Lasseter insisted. “It’s a film I directed and created, and I’m so proud of these characters. The impact of these characters have made in families all over the world is really great. That’s why I make these films, to truly entertain an audience. So to revisit these characters, Mater and Lighting McQueen, and all the folks at Radiator Springs, I’m real excited to do that.”

I personally think a Cars 2 story can do well without Doc. I mean, he was necessary in the first film to inspire McQueen and help him learn. Doc did his job.

However, it's now unfortunate that Cars 2 will be missing two great personalities; George Carlin and Paul Newman.

It's so sad that Cars 2 will be missing his voice too! My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

If they have a great story and knowing full well that Doc Hudson had a part, I just wonder how big that part was. It really is too bad. Paul Newman is a legend.

It's not just the loss of Doc Hudson

We also lost Fillmore this year as well:
George Carlin 1937 - 2008

Maybe they could put Doc and Fillmore up on pedestals in statue form beside Stanley.

I'd hope they would do something in tribute to Carlin and Newman to some extent in Cars 2 and I wouldn't be surprised if they do.

They might work this into the story somehow. Part of Toy Story II was about the fear that a toy might someday meet it's demise in the trash. I wonder if they will address this, if Lightning McQueen returns only to find both Doc and Fillmore were sold for scrap.

oh my goddess... I didn't even know that Paul had died - didn't watch the news this weekend. My partner & I were watchin' the Cars Blu-ray last night and I was wonderin' aloud if they were gonna replace George or just have his character be "gone" but now Paul too!!!

Wow, what a sad morning.

I heard that Paul Newman actually recorded his lines already... sorry, I don't have any sources.

What about Mack. I though the person that did his voice die as well after they flim Cars 1. At the end it was decade to him. So in a way we lost 3 cars members.

Mack is voiced by Pixar's lucky charm, John Ratzenberger. And no, he isn't dead. Not yet.

The tribute was for Joe Ranft, who was one of the directors at Pixar, also the voice of Wheezy, Heimlich, and others.

Oh sorry I though it was him cause the voice sounded like him in all the clips they did. My mistake.
