'Twilight' takes bite out of box office

Teen vampire romance pic drains competition

'Twilight'

By Pamela MCClintock
Variety

Quote:
Fangirls of all ages scored their biggest box office victory yet as Summit Entertainment's teen vampire romance "Twilight"opened to an estimated $70.6 million from 3,419 screens at the domestic box office.

"Twilight" took a big bite out of Disney's 3-D toon "Bolt," which opened to an estimated $27 million from 3,651 playdates, of which more than 900 runs were 3-D. "Bolt" virtually tied for No. 2 with James Bond holdover "Quantum of Solace," which grossed an estimated $27.4 million for a cume of $109.5 million in its first 10 days, according to Rentrak.
Quote:
It wasn't just "Bolt" that got dinged by "Twilight."

"Quantum" declined a steep 59% in its second frame, while previous Bond installment Casino Royale" dropped far less in its second outing.

Major holiday coming up this week which is why it was set for this past weekend, traditionally good time for family film to pick-up numbers.

Phenomenons are lighting in a bottle, it was review-proof from jumpstreet. Summit Entertainment should be very thankful that WB pushed 'Harry' to next year.

I saw twice this weekend!

I don't know how long it will hold onto #1 since most of the diehard fans probably already saw it this weekend.

Reviewers were wrong IMO.

I really enjoyed Twilight, I only thought Bolt was okay. Meet the Robinsons was much better IMO.

Wow total opposite for me, as far as Bolt is concerned -- I didn't think it was as good as a Pixar of course, but it was entertaining and funny.

Meet the Robinsons was unwatchably bad.

Coming out of Bolt we saw all the tweenage girls screaming out of the Twilight theatre. The Arclight (Sherman Oaks) employees were just rolling their eyes.

^ Yeah, for some reason I just couldn't get into Bolt. I mean it was cute and fun, but it just didn't do it for me.

Those who did turn up for “Bolt” gave the toon top grade. Pic saw a 66% increase from Friday to Saturday.

Mouse House expects “Bolt” to do well over the long Thanksgiving weekend as “Twilight” fervor dies down.

“It’s one of the busiest times of the year for family moviegoing,” Disney prexy of domestic distribution Chuck Viane said.

“Bolt” played on more than 900 3-D screens, the biggest count yet for a 3-D title. Those auditoriums did more than two times the business that conventional theaters did.

Still, “Bolt” is far down the list in terms of openings for animated films. Earlier this month, DreamWorks Animation/Paramount’s sequel “Madagascar: Return 2 Africa” debuted to $63.1 million. Among original toons, “Bee Movie” opened to $38 million in November 2007.

“Bolt” did beat the $25.1 million opening of Disney toon “Meet the Robinsons,” which cumed $97.8 million domestically.

Don't know if Bond will beat Bold this weekend, but as a point of reference:

Saw Bolt this morning, theatre was 'maybe' half full, probably less.

Saw Bond this afternoon, the theatre was near sold out.

ALIASd, you highlighted No. 3 along with the other references to 'Bolt' but its estimated that 'Bolt' came in at number No. 2, over 'Twilight'

EDIT: I guess it all depends on if we are looking at the 5 day session or just this weekend.

A lot of my girlfriends who were die hard Twilight book fans were disappointed by the film.

Bolt was sweet. I was bawling.

EDIT: I guess it all depends on if we are looking at the 5 day session or just this weekend.

Thanksgiving holiday boxoffice numbers are always looked at as a 5-day weekend. Final numbers will be in tomorrow.

Internationally:

Quote:
Disney premiered "Bolt," Pixar's digitally animated tale of a tv-celebrity talking dog (voiced by John Travolta), in Russia, Italy and Poland for an estimated $6.6 million from a total of 1,070 screens, sufficient to rank No. 5 on the weekend.
