Re: 'The Princess and The Frog'

I dunno.

That clip was a tad on the creepy side. Especially the business with the kiss and him being from a wealthy family and such. That raises a lot of questions.

Maybe I should have set up that clip...

...it's suppose to take place after Tiana's "I want" song where the viewer finds out she's a workaholic because she wants to own her own bistro. Apparently she's very close to her dream but still far off from it and is willing to try anything at this point. She also doesn't believe in fairy tales, hence the whole "I can't believe I'm doing this" line before she wishes on the star.

Uh, yeah, that... doesn't help much.

I could elaborate for you if you like, but I have a feeling that some would get in a big hissy fit if I did. PM me if you'd like to know what I'm talking about.

Disney Legend Floyd Norman's latest post:

Quote:

The books have arrived at Disney Publishing. Well, some of them anyway. These are a few of the Princess and the Frog titles that will be shipping soon. That means Disney’s first traditional hand drawn animated film is only a few weeks away.

As usual, the Disney artists have done a bang up job delivering these impressive titles. See the movie and read the book -- or vice versa. Whatever works for you. In any case, I’m sure there will be something here for you. Once again, the editors, designers and illustrators have delivered the goods.

We’re all looking forward to this new animated movie. Getting a look at these new books have only heightened the anticipation. They’ll be in your local book store in a few weeks. Check them out if you get a chance.

HOLY CRAP!! How did you two make that connection?!

I'm asking more out of curiosity rather than shock, but still, I'm admittingly surprized.

I didn't say I agreed, I just said that was what he was inferring. Because the prince offers some "compensation" for her kissing him.

Re: 'The Princess and The Frog'

Who said anything about agreeing? I'm just wondering how the heck you two saw that and I missed it! I mean, I went to college where the last two years have a strong focus on reading way too much into content, and I totally missed it! My teachers would be so ashamed of me.

Mm, it's a little bit more than that. It's more like, the element of women being forced by circumstance and a lack of empowerment to submit to the physical desires of powerful & wealthy men in order to achieve their dreams. The fact that the frog prince goes out of his way to mention that he's from a very wealthy, powerful family is a primary indicator that he knows EXACTLY what he is doing. Add to that his overall lecherous approach, and it becomes even more obvious. It's like, you do me this favor (hint hint), and I'll reward you. In today's business world, this sort of behavior is (rightly) considered sexual harassment, and Disney's very lightweight portrayal of it as something cute and adorable is rather disturbing. I'm sorry, but sexual harassment is neither cute nor adorable.

It may seem like a relatively minor thing, I realize, but at the same time, it's one of those subtle hints to young girls that, hey, submitting to the "kisses" of a "frog" (i.e., an unattractive man who has power and wealth and can help you finance your dreams) is OK and will work, so go right ahead and submit, young ladies, because, you know, dreams do come true - when you give in to the desires of powerful men, that is.

Add to that the race element, which has a major history, particularly in this country, insofar as the reality of Black women being used as the sexual playthings of powerful and wealthy white men throughout the years (and not just on the plantation, either), and it just raises the "Ick" factor to alarming levels. What seems like a rather typical fairy tale meet-cute scene, at first glance, actually has some very disturbing undercurrents in it, and that has me concerned.

Re: 'The Princess and The Frog'

It's a good thing that to counter-balance that explination, they made Naven a spoiled brat of a prince who knows the women flock to him because he's handsome and rich.

Then there's the fact that they made Tiana very pro-active and extremely hard working, which is a complete depature from the usual princess persona.

And here I thought Jim Cumming's voice for Ray was bordering on offensive.

Only if one is completely ignorant of the Cajun French patois heard in Louisiana.
