Re: 'The Princess and The Frog'

Retro, as much as I hate to disagree with you, because it doesn't happen often, I have to agree with Darth on this. True equality will only be achieved when race is not a consideration. By focusing on it in either a positive or negative way it's still the focus.

It's part of a generational gap I believe. Do you know I didn't even realize that racism was a current problem till I was a teenager? I grew up in a heavily poor area that had a large Mexican and black population. I saw more discrimination based on poverty than anything else. I grew up thinking that racism was a ridiculous thing from the past and that no one would be stupid enough to care about that anymore. I got a rude awakening when I got to high school and started paying attention to world affairs but the point is this; I can't think of a single person that I know that is my age that thinks that racism is anything but a function of ignorance in older people that we are just waiting to die out. Often I look at people who put such significance on race and wonder if they aren't as big a part of the problem as those bigoted individuals. I have been discriminated against, I don't hold it against an entire people, I hold it against the people who are stupid enough to do it.

Racism, bigotry, sexism and all other forms of Xenophobia are just functions of adolescent society. America will outgrow them. We just have to be as kind as we can to one another in the mean time. I guess my biggest point is this, don't think because we don't consider race a factor that we are ignorant, cruel or insensitive. It's just the opposite. We're the future. We're the ones who will create a new country where considering someone's skin color will be so ridiculous that no one would do it because that's what equality is.

Re: 'The Princess and The Frog'

Personally, if I could say so myself I am tired of the race discussion overall. If it is mentioned in articles, why is it always taken as a negative thing? I don't find it weird and at the end of the day, I am just happy that they are branching out with another race for a classic Disney film. Why can't it just be excitement, instead of constant criticism? This is a film for children and I know they will enjoy it regardless, so I don't see the huge issue.

This is a film for everyone, hopefully they'll allow themselves the opportunity to enjoy based on it's own merits.

Re: 'The Princess and The Frog'

Good year for Lasseter and Pixar. Not only the Venice thing but Lasseter is now secretary of the AMPAS. I hope this helps UP's chances at the Oscars.

i still am hesitant about this movie. I haven't seen anything in clips or artwork that has made me feel really excited yet. I hope I do soon.

I'm certain his single vote will help, board member or no. It's really up to the 6,000+ Academy members to fill the now-expanded Best Picture field. 'UP', 'The Princess and the Frog' and the other 1000 qualifying films will have their say in trade ads, commercials, private events, etc. and have to stand on their own individual qualities for possible contention.

Re: 'The Princess and The Frog'

I wasn't talking about his vote mattering more. The reason that animated movies can't get into the Best Picture category has nothing to do with Math. It has to do with the fact that most of the Academy members don't respect animation as an equal medium to regular film. Lasseter getting on the board and this honor at the Venice Film festival are ways of showing respect and equality to someone whose main product is animation. That is part of the overall shift in perceptions needed to get an animated movie into the Best Picture category.

FYI - JL was first elected to the AMPAS board of governors in August of 2005 representing the short films and feature animation branch.

Re: 'The Princess and The Frog'

Really, hmmm... thank Aliasd. Perhaps it's just wishful thinking on my part. If Ratatouille or Wall-E couldn't get nominated maybe nothing will help Animated films. Ever since the Beauty and the Beast scare and them creating the Animated Film catagory to shunt all Animation into it seems like there is barrier that can't be crossed.

Re: 'The Princess and The Frog'

All the Oscar look and weigh the same in person, the honor is still the honor.

However this year has such a different face, as I said a few posts up, it is still up to the Academy members to fill the now expanded Best Picture category.

And the other great plus that's happened is that Paramount (foolishly maybe) has pushed their Scorsese/DiCaprio film out of this year's race into 2/10. Cheers are still being heard echoing out of the other studios...

Re: 'The Princess and The Frog'

Quote:
At Burbank-based Walt Disney Animation, where Lasseter spends two to three days each week, the heritage of classic stories and hand-drawn animation runs deep, which is one reason Lasseter was so excited to bring back the 2-D tradition for December's "The Princess and the Frog" (directed by "The Little Mermaid" duo Ron Clements and John Musker, the latter being a classmate from his days at CalArts, where Lasseter also studied alongside Tim Burton and Brad Bird).

"I've always felt that the studio that should still be doing hand-drawn animation is the studio that started it all," says Lasseter, who until now has been guiding projects that were already in development through the Disney Animation pipeline (he tweaked "Meet the Robinsons" and restarted "Bolt," but "Princess" is the first one he built from the ground up).

"We couldn't be more proud of 'The Princess and the Frog' and the way it's coming together," says Walt Disney Studios chairman Dick Cook. Rather than simply replicating the Pixar model at Disney, "John and Ed Catmull are creating their own culture here, and they're allowing that culture to be developed by the artists at Disney."

Looking forward, Lasseter's Disney slate includes a mix of hand-drawn and computer-animated projects, and though both he and Cook are hopeful "Princess" will give them license to make more 2-D pics, they insist the fate of the format doesn't rely on the success or failure of that one film.
