Film Review:
Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience

By Kirk Honeycutt
The Hollywood Reporter

Bottom Line:
This tepid concert film does the Jonas Brothers no favors,
not that the band's tweener fans will notice.

Quote:
For the most part, the experience is missing from Disney's "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience."

This is, of course, a 3-D concert film built around the squeaky-clean band of brothers so popular with female tweeners. Unlike "U2 3D," director Bruce Hendricks makes little use of 3-D technology other than to have a band member occasionally throw something at the camera. The producers did hand out glow-in-the-dark wands to the audience, so cameras catch waves of color undulating in the dark. A runway thrusts out into the audience for a brother to venture out into a sea of 3-D-grasping female hands. And that's about it.

Not that this will dissuade any of the Jonas Brothers fan club of young white females who adore every musical chord and bit of foolishness emanating from the stage. Disney looks to score big with that demographic not only with this movie but the soundtrack and DVD.

The concert, taken from the brothers' Burning Up tour last year, mostly was filmed at the Honda Center in Anaheim, despite the film's curious attempt to make it look like everything is happening in and around Manhattan. Guess the Big Apple is more hip than the home of the Anaheim Ducks.

Jonas Brothers ride box office boom

Best picture 'Slumdog Millionaire' expanding

Disney will bow 'Jonas Brothers: 3D Concert Experience'
Friday, hoping for “Hannah Montana”-style success.

More people are going to the movies despite the bad economy -- or because of it.

Domestic theater admissions were up an unheard of 9.3% in January and February, usually one of the slowest times of the year.

In North America, revenues are up 13% for the first two months of 2009, clocking in at $1.62 billion through Tuesday, according to Rentrak.

Admissions also are on the rise overseas. However, the vagaries of currency exchange, including a stronger dollar, are hurting Hollywood.
The six major studios have seen a decline of more than 10% in revenues from foreign markets for the first two months of the year.

The value of the euro is off 20% compared with a year ago and the British pound has declined more than 35%. But, overall, international moviegoing remains decent in terms of local admissions and currency compared with a year ago.

Back home, admissions are often down even when revenues are up, thanks to increased ticket prices. This year's spike in actual foot traffic bucks that trend.

This weekend, observers will be watching to see if Disney's new entry "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" continues the box office boom.
Quote:
Besides "Jonas Brothers," the only other wide release at the domestic B.O. this weekend is Hyde Park's "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li," which Fox opens today in 1,136 runs. Pic doesn't have much buzz, but it will have an advantage if it can draw young males, since they likely won't be going to see "Jonas Brothers."

B.O. observers will be watching to see if "Jonas Brothers" can match last year's $32.1 million opening of Disney's 3-D "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour."

The forecast for "Jonas Brothers" is all over the map. Advance ticket sales aren't anywhere near the levels of those for "Hannah Montana," although the latter was billed as a one-week run, which boosted pre-sales.

Regardless, "Jonas Brothers," opening in 1,271 3-D theaters, will have no trouble winning the weekend.

The Disney machine is hoping that "Jonas Brothers" will be a must-see for tween and teen girls. During their recent concert tour, the pop band incited near-mayhem among fans.

Some say Cyrus' fanbase is bigger since she's the star of her own Disney show. The Jonas Brothers have appeared on Disney television, but their own show won't begin to air until summer. At the same time, the trio has seen wild success with its music, including being nominated for a Grammy for new artist.

Disney Records is simultaneously releasing a soundtrack of the film.

JB-3D's early box office numbers aren't anywhere near Hannah/Miley's concert flick, but a win is a win.

'Jonas Brothers' edges out 'Madea' on Friday at the box office

Feb 28, 2009, 05:53 PM | by Mike Bruno

It may come up short of the $31 million Miley Cyrus' 3-D movie bowed to, but Jonas Brothers: 3-D Concert Experience did come out on top of Friday's estimates with a $4.8 million opening, on tap for a $20 million weekend. That was just enough to unseat last weekend's top dog, Madea Goes to Jail ($4.6 million), which will likely top $60 million after just its second week. Friday's third-place spot went to Slumdog Millionaire ($3.2 million), on pace for a nice post-Oscar bump thanks in part to Fox Searchlight adding 700 runs this frame. And fourth-place Taken ($2.85 million) is set to break $100 million after just four weeks in release.

'Madea' holds on to box office crown

'Brothers' can't steal spotlight from Perry pic

Quote:
Disney's "Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience" didn't sing loud enough in its domestic box office debut to outshine Lionsgate holdover "Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail," which nabbed the weekend crown in a surprise upset.

Coming in No. 2, "Jonas" grossed an estimated $12.7 million from 1,271 runs for a per screen average of $9,992.

That's lower than expected and far below the record $31.1 million opening for Disney's "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour," but it's still the second best opening ever for a concert pic.

Re: JB-3D: 'Jonas brothers' kicks off Disney/IMAX 5-picture deal

Quote:
Like Hilary Duff and Miley Cyrus before them, the Jonas Brothers have grown from early exposure on the Disney Channel to broader public acclaim. Their hitting the big screen with a 3-D concert pic followed a similar move by Cyrus in February 2008.

Disney opened Cyrus' 3-D concert film, "Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds," to $31.1 million in what initially was billed as a one-week-only release. "Best of Both Worlds" eventually was extended and rung up $65.3 million overall domestically.

So in a notable distinction from "Concert," the bow for "Best of Both Worlds" was enhanced by fans' belief that they had to catch the Cyrus pic over its first weekend. "Concert" is set for a multiweek run, so before the pic's release, studio execs cautioned against expecting a Joneses bow of Cyrus proportions.

"I'm as happy as can be," Disney distribution president Chuck Viane insisted Sunday. "When you're looking at almost $10,000 per auditorium, that's doing really well. And it's the N. 2 concert opening of all time."

"Best of Both Worlds" played in just 687 theaters because of limited 3-D availability at the time; "Concert" played in 1,271 venues. "Concert" audiences skewed 85% female, with 65% of patrons age 17 or under.

I don't think I want to live in a world where Madea is the top movie 2 weeks in a row.
