Film kicks off Disney's five-picture deal

HOLLYWOOD -- The Jonas Brothers will kick off Disney's five-picture deal with Imax.

"The Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience" will unspool on Imax screens for one week beginning Feb. 27. Release is timed with the wide rollout of the pic in traditional theaters.

When the deal was announced last November, Robert Zemeckis' 3-D holiday entry "A Christmas Carol" was expected to be the first pic the two companies would release under the new deal.

Imax said the addition of the Jonas Brothers pic to its release sked was possible because of the rollout of the company's digital projection system into more theaters. It now operates 320 theaters in 42 countries.

Before the Imax pact, the Mouse House chose to play its digital 3-D titles in conventional theaters only.

The Jonas Brothers pic is helmed by Bruce Hendricks, who directed the "Hannah Monatan/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour" feature that performed well in theaters last year, earning a surprising $65 million during a limited release. Rockumentary blends excerpts from the Brothers' "Burning Up" concert tour that include guest performances from Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift.

In a record-breaking debut, Disney's Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert film finished #1 at the box office this weekend. Buoyed by the success, Disney announced they would extend the limited-edition run of the 3D film, but did not indicate for how long.

Hannah/Miley took in $29 million, making it the highest-grossing film ever on a Super Bowl weekend. It also set the record for the highest gross by a film released on fewer than 1,000 screens.

Disney 3-D pic “Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour” set off tween mania at the weekend box office, scoring the highest Super Bowl weekend gross of all time -- $29 million -- from only 683 screens, easily sinking previous champ “Titanic.”

Based on the whammo turnout, the Mouse House announced Sunday that it’s extending the pic’s one-week run. By marrying a favorite star who is a phenom among young girls with digital 3-D technology, the studio was able to upend the traditional theatrical release pattern and turn the concert film into an event that moviegoers were willing to pay more for. Super Bowl weekend is a refuge for female-skewing pics as many men and boys are otherwise occupied, and this year was no exception.

“Hannah Montana” smashed several records, including highest opening for a film playing on fewer than 1,000 screens; 20th Century Fox’s “Borat,” which opened at $26.4 million from 837 locations in fall 2006, was the previous record holder. Disney couldn’t have gone wider than it did due to the limited number of digital 3-D screens.

“Titanic” previously held the record for best Super Bowl weekend gross, tallying $25.2 million in its sixth weekend back in 1998. Previous record-holder for best Super Bowl opening was “When a Stranger Calls,” which grossed $21.6 million in 1996.

“Hannah Montana” also posted the best opening for a pure digital 3-D release.

Already a TV and recording star, Miley Cyrus now adds the bigscreen to her resume. Cyrus’ Disney Channel series “Hannah Montana” has been the No. 1 cable show among kids 6-14 for two years. The daughter of country music star Billy Ray Cyrus plays a teen who lives a secret life at night as pop star Hannah Montana.

Miley Cyrus’ sold-out, 70-date concert tour ended Thursday night, the eve of the movie’s opening.

“Here’s a concert that ended Thursday night and everybody could see it on Friday. The beauty of 3-D is that when you are in a theater, every set is like you are in the front row. It’s a better seat than what you’d have in most concert venues. That’s what people coming out of theaters are astounded by,” said Disney president of distribution Chuck Viane.

The majority of digital 3-D screens on which the film is playing are Real D systems. Generally speaking, a ticket for a 3-D film is priced several dollars higher than a regular ticket. That makes 3-D especially attractive to the film biz and theater owners.

Disney has been at the forefront of the 3-D movement, although several other studios are jumping into the game in a major way, including DreamWorks Animation and Fox, where James Cameron is making “Avatar.”

Viane said the decision to extend the “Hannah Montana” run came after conferring with exhibitors on Saturday. He said he’s not sure how much longer the film would play and that the decision would be made on a market-by-market basis. In some cities, it may play two more weeks, in others only one. Movie was produced inhouse at Disney for under $7 million.

It helps, of course, that they're traveling aboard the good ship Disney. The company has put its full weight behind the group with a vision to replicate its wildly lucrative Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana franchise.

The new Jonas Brothers movie is a page straight from the Cyrus playbook. But mixing up-tempo songs with a you-are-there feel (and a few off-stage vignettes to break up the music), the movie aims squarely for anyone with a Jonas jones who failed to get their in-person concert fix.

"Last year, Miley's 3-D movie (of her Best of Both Worlds tour) opened at $31.1 million and ultimately made $65 million in the U.S.," says Paul Dergarabedian, box office analyst for Hollywood .com. "With the success of girl-oriented movies like Twilight, the timing for a Jonas movie couldn't be better. If they open at $30 million, few would be shocked."

Music is the moneymaker

Big bucks already are flowing, thanks to album sales. The group's latest release, A Little Bit Longer — their second on Disney's Hollywood Records and a follow-up to the 1.4 million-selling Jonas Brothers— topped Billboard's album chart shortly after its August unveiling and has sold close to 1.5 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Last year's concert tour grossed $41.5 million and was the 13th biggest in North America, "one step above Coldplay," says Gary Bongiovanni, editor of the touring trade publication Pollstar. "They were the breakout new act of the year. Everyone else out there, from Madonna on down, were the usual suspects. They haven't peaked yet."

I'm TOTALLY going!!! I got my tickets on Fandango already and I'm going opening night - hoooray! Can't take ANY chances, especially because it'll be showing in IMAX theaters for only a week

The studio employed this strategy with the 'Hannah/Miley' release too, extending it after overwhelming popular demand looks good to consumers, it implies success and suggests the immediacy of purchasing tickets and/or limited edition merchandise. I'd expect to see this happen with the JoBros too.

That's true, but with so many other 3D films coming out, I feel like the run in IMAX theaters really will be limited to a week, although I do hope it stays out longer! I feel like a 3D movie is meant to be seen in IMAX rather than in a regular theater.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- Hundreds of screaming fans were "burning up" on Tuesday for pop sensations the Jonas Brothers.

"We are crazy obsessed, madly in love with the Jonas Brothers to the max," said fan Breanna Capblanco.

The premiere of the new film "Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience" was held Tuesday night at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, and fans had been lining up all day to catch a glimpse of Kevin, Joe and Nick Jonas.

The concert film follows the Jonas Brothers as they cross the country on their "Burning Up Tour", and features special guest appearance by singers Demi Lovato and Taylor Swift.

To fully savor Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience, it's best to watch with an audience overwhelmingly populated by girls and young women, all of them on their feet singing lyrics like ''Oooh, this is an S.O.S.,'' and squealing every time one of the wildly popular teen-bait hotties mugs for the restless camera. And you're in luck: Squeal-o-vision is pretty much guaranteed at any multiplex screening of Disney's newest puppy-pop 
concert film. Fans who know all the words to ''BB Good'' and ''Burnin' Up'' are the target ticket buyers for this chipper, careful brand extension of the sani-packaged boy band composed of 21-year-old Kevin (the fun one), 
19-year-old Joe (the cute one), and 16-year-old Nick Jonas (the eerily self-possessed too-young-to-vote one, who 
 has been singing for a living since he was a 
6-year-old New Jersey squirt).

As for the extra-cool format the movie is shot in, not much happens in Disney Digital 3-D that couldn't have happened in Disney Five Minutes Ago 2-D — except for one 
unintentionally, hilariously, subliminally dirty bit that will be lost (I hope) on the fervent crowd. I refer to the moment where the 
boys grab big fire hoses, hold them like...fire hoses...and spray the heads of their moaning girl fans with thick geysers of, um, foam. The girls respond by holding up their lighted little wands. The whole sequence becomes so phallic that the movie seems to be breaking loose toward Spinal Tap territory. Then it 
 returns safely to Disney earth with the 
 heavenly message encoded in the boys' finger jewelry: Abstinence only, kids!

The focus is on the fans in Disney’s “Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience,” a gimmick-driven rock doc that alternates between high-energy stereoscopic footage of the group’s Anaheim, Calif., arena show and strategic 2-D bits designed to encourage all those giddy teenage girls that if they only scream loud enough, the Jonas Brothers might materialize in person (to the extent that the siblings plan to greet fans at screenings of their film nationwide). While the recession forces American parents to save, their daughters will be breaking open their piggy banks to buy premium-price tickets to this limited-time spectacle.
