Trevor Rabin scores Race to Witch Mountain

Scoringsessions

Quote:
Recently, composer Trevor Rabin recorded his score to the upcoming family sci-fi adventure Race to Witch Mountain. Directed by Andy Fickman and starring Dwayne Johnson and Carla Gugino, the music for the film was recorded at the Sony Scoring Stage with a large orchestra and choir.

The energetic and propulsive music was conducted by orchestrator Gordon Goodwin, who led a 78-piece ensemble of the Hollywood Studio Symphony. Featuring strong brass lines and complex string ostinatos, the music is accentuated with electronics and percussion to keep the action flowing.

Re: 'Race to Witch Mountain' 3/13/09

I had the chance to see this film on Friday 3/6 and enjoyed it. While watching it I couldn't help but think it could easily be retitled to Chase to Witch Mountain and it would be just as accurate.

Dwayne Johnson brings the same fun, new world family-action hero goods he displayed in his last Disney hit, 'The Game Plan.' He is just plain fun to watch. Throw in the always wonderful Carla Gugino (or the mom from the 'Spy Kids' films as my niece refers to her as), the terrific young actress AnnaSophia Robb from 'Bridge to Terabithia', a few well-chosen comedic cameos, non-stop action and a Terminator/Boba Fett/Predator-like character designed by the post-Giger 'Alien' team.

And watch for nice cameos from the original actors, Kim Richards and Ike Eisenmann, who played the kids in the 1975 film, 'Escape to Witch Mountain' and 'Return from Witch Mountain' in 1978.

Box offices start your engines.

'Race to Witch Mountain' is rated PG
Opens Friday March 13

'Witch Mountain' faces 'Watchmen'

'Last House' also opening wide on Friday

By Dave McNary, Pamela MClintock
Variety

Quote:
The race is on at the weekend box office as Disney family adventure "Race to Witch Mountain" takes on holdover "Watchmen."

"Witch Mountain," toplining Dwayne Johnson, opens today at the domestic box office in 3,187 runs.
Quote:
Box office observers say that "Race to Witch Mountain" and "Watchmen" could both end up in the low $20 million range. "Last House on the Left" is expected to come in below that, but no one's ruling out the possibility that the horror title could overperform.

"Race to Witch Mountain," a reimagining of the 1970s family franchise, reunites Johnson and director Andy Fickman in their first pairing since sleeper hit "The Game Plan." That film, also a Disney title, opened to $23 million in September 2007 on its way to cuming $90.6 million domestically.
"Witch Mountain," because of its action and special effects, will play older than "Game Plan" while still drawing the kids.

One big advantage for "Witch Mountain" is its PG rating. Family-friendly films are few and far between at this time of year, helping explain why Sony's PG-rated comedy "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" has turned into a blockbuster, grossing $134.4 million since opening in mid-January.

Quote:
Bottom Line: Action and sci-fi thrills blend nicely with comedy in one of Disney's best action movies this side of Jerry Bruckheimer.

Quote:
So it can be done. "Race to Witch Mountain" is a film from Walt Disney Pictures that doesn't play like a family film manufactured by the Disney machine. It plays, in fact, like a sci-fi action adventure that genre fans of all ages will recognize as such. It doesn't mind PG-rated violence, scary moments or even death threats issued by bad guys -- and good.

More importantly, it's entertaining with a crafty mixture of action, humor and drama. Coming on the tripped-up heels of a mediocre concert movie featuring a youth band lacking in spontaneity, "Witch Mountain" goes a long way toward re-establishing Disney's grasp on a youth market that seemed to be slipping away from the studio. Boxoffice should be strong well into Easter weekend.

The film is something of a remake of the studio's classic 1975 action caper "Escape to Witch Mountain." But director Andy Fickman and writers Matt Lopez and Mark Bomback have updated and reimagined the story to the point that this is very much a new "Witch's" brew.

Film Review: Race to Witch Mountain

'Race to Witch Mountain'

By Joe Lydon
Variety

Quote:
Smartly positioned for maximum potential as a breakout spring hit with cross-generational appeal, "Race to Witch Mountain" is the sort of full-throttle crowd-pleaser capable of grabbing even teen and twentysomething ticketbuyers who normally avoid anything that smacks of "family entertainment." There's something for almost every demo here -- including baby-boomers with fond memories of the original Disney-produced "Witch Mountain" pics of the 1970s -- and the entire package is impressively propelled by the star-powered, likably comic-macho perf by Dwayne Johnson (formerly known as the Rock). Expect strong B.O. numbers, even stronger homevid sales and very early talk of a possible sequel.

Quote:
Hyped as a "modern-day re-imagining" of the novel by Alexander Key -- which previously inspired "Escape to Witch Mountain (1975) and its sequel "Return from Witch Mountain" (1978) -- "Race" justifies its title by coming off as much more of a high-velocity action-adventure than its predecessors.

Re: 'Race to Witch Mountain'

I enjoyed the original, the sequel not so much (so to speak).

Having said that, I will be interested to see this movie.

I have to laugh at modern day nomenclature, though.

For example a rerun is now an "encore performance", or "best of" show.

And a re-make is now either a "re-telling" or "re-imagining". Now with Disney I know the "imagining" part has improved a great deal over the past 34 years.

But overall, I'd say Hollywood is "green"...lots of "re-cycling" going on.

A rose by any other name...
