ESPN's 'SportsCenter' heads West

Signature show will air from L.A. Live complex

ESPN officially began its West Coast broadcast operations Tuesday as the cabler prepared for its signature "SportsCenter" to be aired live from the L.A. Live entertainment complex in downtown, adjacent to Staples Center.

The 10 p.m. "SportsCenter" broadcast will take place Monday through Friday at the network's new production facility. Other ESPN-produced programming will originate there as well, including the network's L.A. radio affiliate.

"It's an important milestone for the company," said ESPN president George Bodenheimer, who, along with other execs, was on hand at the "SportsCenter" studio. "It's part of the evolution and growth at the company. ... We had been looking for production facilities. We didn't skimp on the quality."

The facility will house three production control rooms, two master control rooms and eight edit suites.

The 10 p.m. show will be anchored by Stan Verrett and Neil Everett, who came west from the network's Bristol, Conn. headquarters. ESPN personality Stuart Scott will also host programming from Los Angeles on an occasional basis.

"I don't think we'll view this as a different broadcast from what we've done before," said Verrett, "but we'll be able to be more aggressive on delivering news of West Coast games."
