'POTC 4' finds new Direction to set sail in 2010

According to Daily Variety 'Pirates of the Caribbean 4' has found a new director since Gore Verbinski decided to disembark the franchise. Rob Marshall, whose 2002 directorial debut for Disney's Miramax Films 'Chicago' won the Best Picture Oscar and 6 others and received a total of 13 nominations, looks like the frontrunner to set sail with the studio's fourth 'POTC' film.

Marshall's next film another musical adaptation of 'Nine' for The Weinstein Company starring Academy Award winners Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren and Oscar nominee Kate Hudson. 'Nine' opens in theatres on November 25th.

The studio and Jerry Bruckheimer had announced recently that they were ready to continue the 'Pirates' series prior to riding off on the previously-announced 'Lone Ranger' film. Johnny Depp is expected to return as Captain Jack Sparrow and casting is underway for new characters as well.

I do not wish to see Jack Sparrow doing jazz hands.

With $2.6 billion in worldwide box office revenue (and untold millioms & millions more in DVDs, merchandising, etc.) so far - it is never really over.

Maybe POTC 4 will turn out to be a musical.

Maybe it'll turn out like this...

...on second thought, let's hope not!

Looks like it'll be pretty cool. I'm glad that Orlando Bloom has decided not to come back. His and Elizabeth's story has ended.

The first one was great, the second not so much, the third was simply dreadful.

Let's not forget though, that Rob Marshall also directed the 1999 WWoD version of "Annie" and 2005's Oscar Winning "Memoirs of a Geisha."

Great find ... love looking back at the old trailers ... Not to mention Kristy McNichol was one of my first childhood crushes.

Cool! To bad Micheal Bay didn't get the role as director

Well, yeah, if craptastic is the desired goal for your movie franchise, Bay would kick the downward spiral off to a terrific start. You'd then move on to Brett Ratner, Renny Harlin, Paul W. S. Anderson, Jonathan Mostow, and finish up your demolition of a great film franchise by hiring Uwe Boll for POTC 9! Complete devastation would be most assured!

Well, define "need" when it comes to movies. Does anyone truly NEED any movie? No, of course not. Food, clothing, shelter, good health, clean water, those are needs. Movies? Luxuries, most assuredly.

I'm certainly interested in seeing more film adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow, I'm just a tad skittish about Bruckheimer hiring Rob Marshall for the job. His track record as a film director is a bit iffy, Chicago notwithstanding.

I dunno, every film project is a gamble, quite honestly. Perhaps Marshall can pull it off, despite my reservations. We shall see.

Now, if it were me, I might consider hiring Terry Gilliam. He's done a great job with Depp previously, he's experienced in both comedy and drama, and it'd be a delight to see his take on the franchise. Possibly Tim Burton (that'd be intriguing too). Jay Roach, another comedy director, would likely do a great job (the POTC series is, essentially, a comedy adventure series), too. Maybe Barry Sonnenfeld (experienced with comedy, fantasy-adventure, and big budgets). Maybe even somebody younger and so far lesser known (these humongous film projects wore out a relative youngster like Verbinski, they may kill an older director).

There's nothing wrong with "The Pirate Movie", it took me years to find a copy! Where else can you find a squeeky toy codprice ;-)

I'd love to see another Pirates movie, and they did leave a hook for another one at the end of 3.

But I'm not too thrilled with the fact that it will have a new director. Gore did the first 3 and he did a good job. Though Bruckheimer is still producing, I still have this feeling that it might be the end of the franchise, and we may see it start sinking. But I guess we'll just have to wait to see the finished product. Hopefully it will be good.
