Shankman, Mechanic to produce Oscars

Duo tapped for 82nd Academy Awards gig

Quote:
Oscar has new ringleaders in Adam Shankman and Bill Mechanic, who will produce the 82nd Academy Awards.

The duo replace Bill Condon and Laurence Mark, who produced last season's show, which enjoyed the first ratings boost in years with Hugh Jackman as host.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences' board of directors had asked Condon and Mark to return, but film projects didn't allow them to commit. The two were first-timers for the job, as are Shankman and Mechanic.

A former choreographer, Shankman has become a prolific director and producer, recently helming Disney's "Bedtime Stories" and New Line's musical "Hairspray." He also produced New Line's comedy "17 Again" and the Mouse's upcoming "Step Up 3-D."
Quote:
Shankman can add the Oscars to a dance card that's filling up fast. In addition to serving as one of the main judges on Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance," Shankman is prepping to helm a bigscreen adaptation of the musical "Rock of Ages" for New Line, with production to start next summer, and has another of "Bye Bye Birdie" in development.

He also runs Disney-based Offspring Entertainment, together with Jennifer Gibgot, through which they produced "The Last Song," "Going the Distance" and "Step Up 3-D," all bowing next year.

One voter who enthusiastically supports the five extra finalists is John Lasseter, the big cheese of animation at Pixarand Disney as well as the secretary of the board of governors. Considering the only animated feature to ever make the best-picture cut was 1991's Beauty and the Beast, he's delighted that movies like Pixar's summer hit Up– which earned ecstatic reviews – will have an easier chance of sneaking in.

"I don't think it diminishes anything," he says. "There are an awful lot of more commercial films that have not been nominated that should have been. Now there's a whole generation of moviegoers who don't relate as much to the Oscars, since the movies that they love so much are not represented. This will open the door."

It does rankle some that the rules had to be bent before animated features as well as documentaries and foreign-language films, which all have separate best-picture categories, could be given a fairer chance at the biggest honor.

Says Peter Schneider, the former head of Disney feature animation who was in charge when Beauty was in the running: "It won't mean as much. Getting in is not as special as when it was just five. It's like cheating."

Hosts of the 82nd Academy Awards

Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin
will serve as co-hosts of the
82nd Academy Awards®.

“We think the team of Steve and Alec are the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars,” said Oscar telecast producers Bill Mechanic and Adam Shankman. “Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event.”

“I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin,” said Martin.

“I don’t play the banjo but I’m thrilled to be hosting the Oscars – it’s the opportunity of a lifetime,” said Baldwin.

Steve Martin

Martin hosted the 73rd and 75th Academy Awards shows, earning an Emmy nomination for the first stint. He has also served as a presenter on the show several times, most recently at the ceremony in February when he appeared with Tina Fey. He is currently touring with the bluegrass band Steep Canyon Rangers in support of his latest album “The Crow: New Songs for the Five String Banjo.” In 1977 and 1978 Martin won Grammys for Best Comedy Recording. He earned a third Grammy in 2001 in the Best Country Instrumental Performance category. In 2007 Martin earned a Kennedy Center Honor.

Alec Balwin

Baldwin was nominated for an Academy Award in 2003 for his supporting role in “The Cooler.” That year also marked his most recent appearance as a presenter on the show. Baldwin currently stars as Jack Donaghy on the comedy “30 Rock,” a role for which he has won two Emmys (in 2008 and 2009). Baldwin earned a Tony nomination in 1992 for his performance in “A Streetcar Named Desire.”
