It certainly has that potential - especially if they make it a cheap clone like Hong Kong. However, if they take the park in a new direction and it is truly unique, it won't hurt any of the other Disney parks. It might even have the opposite effect and help spur new growth, technology, and ideas for the US parks.

I'm not nearly as worried about the Shanghai park as I was (and am) about the Hong Kong park.

Think of Shanghai Disneyland as a regional park. Few that visit the Shanghai park will ever have the means to visit the US parks, and few in the US will ever consider visiting Shanghai. They just don't compete with each other in a direct way as perhaps Disneyland and Disney World do.

Re: Shanghai Disneyland is a go!

Fresh parks means fresh designs on classic attractions which means new effects which end up in California and are longed for in Florida.

Got that?

Personally I'd rather see the money that is going to be used to build this park put into upgrades and refurbishments for the other parks.

I'd bet that Disney really isn't putting up too much. I think we'll find that most of the initial cost is being picked up by the Chinese government. I'll be interested to see how much the project is slated for and how the costs break out between the partners (Disney and China).

But we'll benefit in the states anyway since many of the technologies and special effects being worked on for Shanghai will probably make their way to our parks in the future.

This investment in Shanghai could be as beneficial to the state-side parks as Tokyo Disneyland and Disney Sea were.

Yes, ether one of these castles will do(or new castle too.)

But what we don't want to see is Cinderella's Castle(TDL already has it.) or Sleeping Beauty Castle(HKDL already has it) and we don't want a carbon copy of DLP's Sleeping Beauty Castle( We Don't want Shanghai to be reduntant and Let Paris still be be special, Disney!)

Well, I just hope that these Disney parks don't end up being like Hard Rock Cafe.

I don't know, but there just seems to be something special having disney parks in limited areas.

Just my 2 cents

When reversed, it seems to fit into the layout of the resort.

Dan Brown taught us that. It started with Da Vinci

I honestly think Disneyland Peru would be a better choice.
Or possibly Disneyland Vatican City...
Now that would be a challenge

On a serious note, I agree with Oogie.
Also, as far as I know, Disneyland Hong Kong still isn't doing too well.
How do they know this one will be more successful?

I found many Chinese the same when I was there ... Of course, I had my wife to help me with language, she speaks both Mandarin and Cantonese. I did have a couple of locals want to practice their English with me (real students, not people trying to scam me). She was excited to see a westerner she could talk to.

Shanghai is more exotic, and although it's probably more modern than New York, it's in a very particular place. Where the police can lock you up for 14 days if they suspect you have swine flu. It just doesn't seem quite as welcoming a place. I wouldn't feel as safe, as free or able to move independently. I'd be less comfortable about being abroad while I was there.

Then again, maybe that would be good for me to get out of my comfort zone and spend some time soaking up Chinese culture in Shanghai, but it's not something I've ever cared to do before.
I agree about taking time to see the local area as well as visiting the Disney parks. My last trip to China was the first time I went to Shanghai. The city is full of English speaking tourists and people on business. While I agree Hong Kong felt more welcoming than Shanghai, it is certainly a city where you can still explore. As with any big city, there are places to avoid, and a few pan-handlers to deal with. I look forward to going back in the future.

Re: Shanghai Disneyland is a go!

I can imagine having a wonderful time in Shanghai, until something goes terribly wrong.

Remember Sean Penn and Madonna in Shanghai Surprise?
