September 26, 2006 Quote:
The start of the post-summer to pre-Christmas doldrums has the overseas boxoffice looking for a new U.S. locomotive to replace "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," as the last of the vacation-season blockbusters made a leisurely withdrawal. The seemingly unstoppable Buena Vista International release reached a foreign gross of $625.3 million, taking in $7.3 million from 3,372 screens in 34 countries.
But "Pirates' " effort to dominate the international market for the 11th time in 12 weeks, was thwarted by German entry "Perfume: The Story of a Murderer." The Tom Tykwer-helmed film emerged as the weekend's No. 1 international film with an estimated take of $11.3 million from 1,300 screens in five markets. With no Hollywood titles with significant boxoffice clout entering the market, local-language films are moving into the limelight, at least until the major U.S. studios start unleashing their year-end holiday gifts.
