Let Tom Sawyer Have His Island - Los Angeles Times Editorial, 10/7/06

http://www.latimes.com/news/printedi...a-news-comment

Quote:

FOR 130 YEARS, TOM SAWYER has been among the best-known characters in American literature. For 50 of those years, he's also had his very own island at Disneyland, one of the few attractions there designed by Walt Disney himself. But he can't match the movie-star appeal of a rubber-spined pirate named Jack Sparrow.

Disney officials are reportedly considering a makeover for Tom Sawyer Island, which has been part of Disneyland almost since its opening in 1955. The website Miceage.com, which is devoted to Disney news, quotes insiders as saying the park may spend $28 million to turn the attraction into a pirate-themed island in time for the third installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie series. Disney officials neither confirm nor deny the rumors.

interesting... I agree with them on a lot of what they said, but I still feel that change wouldn't be as bad as people are making it out to be.

after all this outcry, if they do change it, it will still be good because now they know WHY we like it!

There are a few things...

First, it will severly damage the themeing of Disneyland Tom Sawyer's Island is too much connected to frontierland/criter country and the rivers of america and too far from adventureland to make any sense theme wise.

Second of all, this isn't some cool idea the Imagineers came up with thats going to be so amazing awsome that it just HAS to be greenlit. This is a blatant cash-in to the film franchise that was devised by marketing people who don't know much about disney in the first place. Rasolu and his people are forcing WDI to throw it together by next summer. It is absoluetly absurd to think something on such a rushed schedule, NOT created with the heart and craftmanship of the imagineers, will even be remotely good. This is a recipe for disaster. Need I remind you all of Tomorrowland'97?

There are so many more things I could think of but right now I will leave it at that.

After all, not every beloved literary trickster wears mascara and drinks rum. One plays hooky and talks other kids into painting white picket fences — and he has stood the test of time far better than this summer's top box-office attraction will.
Abso-darn-tootin!

Spot on observation, LA Times...
