Drama League nominees named

'Blonde,' 'Curtains,' 'Heights' on musical list

By Gordon Cox
Variety
April 25, 2007

Quote:
The Drama League nominated a wide array of Broadway and Off Broadway productions for its annual legit awards.

League, a professional development and service org, has a relaxed nomination system, which means it's tapped a total of 28 shows divided into four categories, as well as 78 thesps who are up for a single performance award. Broadway and Off Broadway productions compete in the same categories for kudos.

Two noteworthy shows snubbed by Monday's Outer Critics Circle noms -- "The Year of Magical Thinking" (no noms) and "Legally Blonde" (one acting nom) -- are contenders for the League awards for new play and new musical, respectively.

On the new tuner list is "Blonde," "Curtains," "In the Heights," "Kiki & Herb: Alive on Broadway," "Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me," "Mary Poppins" and "Spring Awakening."

New play candidates are "Magical Thinking," "Blackbird," "Coram Boy," "Frost/Nixon," "No Child," "Radio Golf," "The Coast of Utopia" and "The Scene."

The season's Broadway productions of "Grey Gardens" and "The Little Dog Laughed" were ineligible, because their earlier Off Broadway incarnations were considered last season.

Tuner revivals vying for a title are "110 in the Shade," "A Chorus Line," "Company," "Les Miserables" and "The Fantasticks."

Nominated play revivals are "Inherit the Wind," "Journey's End," "Mother Courage and Her Children," "Seven Guitars, "Talk Radio," "The Hairy Ape," "The Merchant of Venice" and "Translations."

The long list of thesps up for the acting award include F. Murray Abraham ("Merchant of Venice"), Kristin Chenoweth ("The Apple Tree"), Raul Esparza ("Company"), Jonathan Groff ("Spring Awakening"), Audra McDonald ("110 in the Shade") and David Greenspan ("Some Men"). The entire casts of "Coram Boy" and "Columbinus" also are in the mix.

Three special awards will go to helmer Michael Mayer ("Spring Awakening"), composer-lyricist duo John Kander and Fred Ebb ("Curtains," "Chicago") and charity org Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids.

Laurels are doled out May 11 at the Drama League's annual awards luncheon, hosted this year by Gary Beach ("Les Miserables").

And the nominees include...

PRODUCTION OF A MUSICAL
"Curtains"
"In the Heights"
"Kiki & Herb: Alive on Broadway"
"Legally Blonde"
"Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me"
"Mary Poppins"
"Spring Awakening"

PRODUCTION OF A PLAY
"Blackbird"
"Coram Boy"
"Frost/Nixon"
"No Child"
"Radio Golf"
"The Coast of Utopia"
"The Scene"
"The Year of Magical Thinking"

The Drama League also pays tribute to the season’s best performers by including the nominees of The Distinguished Performance Award on a dais. This season’s 78-member dais includes the following performers, one of whom will be honored with the Distinguished Performance Award at the awards ceremony on Friday, May 11:

Ashley Brown -- "Mary Poppins"

*Ensemble -- "Coram Boy"

Gavin Lee -- "Mary Poppins"
