International Box Office updates for 'Ratatouille' & 'POTC: AWE'

Buena Vista International's release of Pixar/Disney's "Ratatouille" finished fourth during the weekend with an estimated $9.3 million from 1,835 screens in a dozen markets. Its overseas cume stands at $17.6 million ($127.1 million worldwide).

"Ratatouille," starring Patton Oswalt as the voice of Remy, the animated French rat, opened in six new territories, grabbing the No. 1 spots in each. The best was Mexico, with an estimated $4.2 million from 750 screens, more than the No. 2-No. 4 film grosses combined. It was the second-biggest market opening ever for a Pixar title. In Brazil, the opening tally was $1.3 million from 300 screens.

BVI's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" continued in durable fashion in its seventh weekend internationally, grossing an estimated $8.1 million from 6,597 screens in 51 markets. Its overseas cume stands at $623.7 million, making the "Pirates" sequel the fifth-biggest international release ever, surpassing "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," which grossed $614.7 million in 2002.

Worldwide, "At World's End's" gross is $925.4 million, making it the sixth-biggest boxoffice hit ever, just behind 2003's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" ($926.3 million), which BVI expects Captain Jack Sparrow and his crew to surpass by todayMonday or Tuesday. Market cumes for "At World's End" include the U.K., with $78.9 million; Japan, $78 million; Germany, $56.1 million; France, $45.7 million; and China, $15.3 million (making it the biggest Disney title to play the market).

Ratatouille secured third place with a $16.7 million weekend from 30 markets for a $149.4 million total. The animated comedy continues to wow in France with a $7.9 million third weekend, off just 12 percent for a $36.3 million total. Other mighty holds came from the Netherlands (down 18 percent), Hong Kong (down 35 percent) and Japan (down 11 percent). Ratatouille also had a few strong openings in smaller markets: Iceland ($56,907 from 10 screens), Lithuania ($123,445 from 9), Malaysia ($346,343 from 52), Slovenia ($56,753 from 12) and the United Arab Emirates ($195,818 from 19).

Tentpoles winding down as box office cools

Jason Bourne shot to the top slot overseas, with "The Bourne Ultimatum" leading a cooling foreign box office with $14.4 million at 2,100 playdates in 25 markets.

With summer tentpoles winding down, "Ultimatum" posted the lowest winning international total since the final frame in April when "Wild Hogs" led with $7.2 million. With three other pics -- "The Simpsons Movie," "Ratatouille" and "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" -- grossing more than $10 million, overall international biz turned in a respectable rather than blockbuster performance.

The frame represents one of the few times this summer when biz hasn't exceeded the year-ago weekend, which was led by "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" with $17.8 million. But the total 2007 foreign summer box office towers over last year's, leading by more than 15% thanks to socko perfs by "Transformers" and "Simpsons"; franchises like "Phoenix"; and the third iterations of "Spider-Man," "Pirates" and "Shrek."

Disney's "Ratatouille" turned in another tasty weekend with $11.6 million at 3,055 in 29 markets, pushing the Pixar project to $172 million overseas with half the foreign territories still to open. "Ratatouille" will far surpass the final international cume of $218 million for "Cars," last summer's Pixar entry.

France stayed stellar, with the fourth frame off only 23% to $5.9 million, lifting the Paris-set toon to $44.9 million -- only $3 million behind "Pirates 3" as the top pic in that market this year. "Ratatouille" more than doubled the $2.8 million opening French frame for "Hairspray."

Ratatouille's strong international box office will more than offset the slightly lower results (compared to other Pixar films) in the US. It's going to be another all-around strong performer that defies its critics that insist on calling it a "disappointment."

And on that topic (the topic being Pixar movies that have been mis-labeled as disappointments), I still have friends who tell me their kids watch "Cars" every week, insist on having "Cars" birthday parties, continue to buy "Cars" merchandise, etc, etc, etc.

"Shrek the Third" ruled at the international box office in the final summer weekend with $17.2 million, topping "The Bourne Ultimatum" by $2 million as the ogre won the crown for the fourth time.

The frame capped a sizzling summer offshore as the two three-quels turned in solid numbers -- far above the same frame a year ago when "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" led with $11.6 million. And it was a performance exemplifying the entire summer, which saw sturdy grosses from new iterations of "Shrek," "Spider-Man," "Pirates of the Carribean," "Harry Potter," "Die Hard," "Fantastic Four" and "Ocean's Thirteen" along with impressive contributions from "Transformers," "The Simpsons Movie" and "Ratatouille."

Disney's "Ratatouille" led the rest of the pack with $10.1 million at 2,913 in 30 markets," topped again by tasty French takings in its fifth frame with $5.2 million -- off a mere 7% and more than the combined grosses of the next three pics. The Paris-set Pixar toon's provoked plenty of French affection with a $51 million cume, trailing only "Spider-Man 3" as the year's top grosser in the territory.

"Ratatouille" has totaled $189 million overseas with 50% of markets still to launch, starting next weekend with Australia.

The Paris-set toon's been embraced by French audiences with a $52.6 million market total, trailing "Spider-Man 3" by only $400,000 as the top grosser of 2007.

"Ratatouille" also crossed the $200 million mark in international grosses, the ninth pic to hit that milestone this year following "300," "Spider-Man 3," "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End," "Shrek the Third," "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," "Transformers," "The Simpsons Movie" and "Live Free or Die Hard." With more than three months left, 2007 has already matched the total of $200 million grossers released last year -- underlining the key driver in this year's 20% hike in overseas biz for the major studios.

"Ratatouille" is also the 25th Disney pic to top $200 million internationally and has nearly matched the domestic cume. And it's still got plenty of gas in the tank with October openings set for the U.K., Germany, Italy and Scandinavia.

Disney's "Underdog" put the bite on $510,000 in Brazil in its first foreign opening, on par with "Herbie: Fully Loaded."

Disney's "Ratatouille" followed in third with $5.5 million at 3,092 in 34 markets, led by $1.5 million each in Australia and France, to lift the pic's worldwide gross past $210 million. The seventh French frame represented the first time that "Ratatouille" hasn't won in that market, where the Pixar pic is already the top 2007 grosser with $54.4 million.

Disney/Pixar's "Ratatouille" opened at No. 1 in South Africa. In France, in its eighth weekend, it was down just 7% from the previous stanza. The France estimate is $1.3 million from 736 screens for a market cume of $55.6 million, a 2007 record in the market.

"Ratatouille's" overall weekend came in at an estimated $4 million from 2,659 screens in 32 markets for an international total of $215.5 million.

'Ratatouille' cooks up o'seas win

TORONTO -- A delectable opening in Germany helped Disney/Pixar's "Ratatouille" finish as the No. 1 film internationally during the weekend with an estimated $19.7 million from 3,010 playdates in 30 markets.

The animated movie about a Parisian rat with a discerning palette cooked up an estimated $12.2 million on 700 screens to open No. 1 in Germany.

"Ratatouille" was "like a vacuum cleaner in Germany," Disney vp international sales and distribution David Kornblum said.

The film also bowed at No. 1 in Austria with an estimated $1.6 million from 125 dates and came out on top in German-speaking Switzerland with an estimated $905,000 from 125 screens. An opening in Denmark tickled another $865,000 from 50 screens.

Holdovers included "Ratatouille" earning another $760,000 in France on 592 screens to take its local cume to $59 million, and coming away with an estimated $650,000 on 129 screens in Greece during its second weekend to take its cume there to $1.6 million.

The international cume for Pixar's latest release stands at $247 million; it's at $450 million worldwide. That makes "Ratatouille" the 14th-biggest movie launched internationally by Disney and its 15th-biggest release of all time.

Next up for the Pixar concoction is a Friday opening in the U.K., Italy on Oct. 17, and Oct. 19 bows in China, Sweden, Poland and Finland.

I think it could have a good release here in the UK. There's nothing much out at the moment and the film has got decent exposure on Buses and underground posters as well as being heavily pushed in the UK Disney comics/magazines.

Plus the last week has seen the weather drop in a major way so the cinema is the perfect place to go right now.

Not usually this long. There's loads of films that will nowadays be released the same weekend in the UK as the USA and with an international release date being the same day we actually get it first thanks to the time difference. All the movies that Ratatouille had to fight over the summer in teh USA (Shrek, Transformers, Die Hard, Potter) have been and gone over here.

Pixar films have traditionally been a little later here than there, but I think this is a little longer that we usually have to wait. I think it's possible that without Enchanted being released here in November (at least I haven't seen any hype over here for it yet) that they have decided to take full advantage of the this time of year timeslot rather than rush it out with the summer blockbusters so it wouldn't clash with the Enchanted release. As I said, there is VERY little out here at the moment for it to have to battle with, Superbad has been out a few weeks as has Run Fatboy Run, no-ones going to be seeing Heartbreak Kid, Woodcock or Chuck & Larry. It's only real competition are Attonment and Kingdom (both very differnt audience).

It should do very well.

“Ratatouille” remained the leading international film for a second straight weekend as the Disney/¬Pixar family offering widened its European run, bringing in $21 million during the weekend from 3,410 screens in 34 countries. The animated culinary treat, which became the third-biggest Disney/Pixar entry ever by beating “Monsters, Inc.’s” $270 million, reached an international cume of $271.8 million and is expected to top $300 million before it completes its run.

U.K. moviegoers especially enjoyed the menu, feasting to $9.2 million from 502 screens as it outperformed all films in the market by 5%. “Ratatouille” also held the No. 1 position on boxoffice charts in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Greece and South Africa. The second weekend in Germany netted $6.4 million from 970 screens for an 11-day market cume of $20.4 million. Other two-weekend totals include Austria’s, $3 million and Switzerland’s, $4.7 million. In France, home of the bistro rodent-turned-chef, the toon has brought in $59.5 million in 11 weekends.

The ongoing feast, benefiting from Disney International’s strategic booking among a summer swarm of sequel blockbusters, is winding down; Italy, Sweden, Finland, Poland and China come aboard this weekend as the final dates in a run that started June 28.

I saw a few cardboard cut-outs for Enchanted in my local Uk cinema only last week,
so its on its way - and it is going to be shown as part of the London Film Festival at the end of October - so expect it to hav a UK release before the end of the year.
