Disney Publishing to End Its 'Adventures'

Disney Publishing Worldwide will fold its Disney Adventures with the November issue to focus on new magazine and book efforts, a company spokesperson said.

Publisher Mary Beth Wright will stay at Disney Publishing as the publisher of parenting title FamilyFun, which Disney continues to publish, along with Wondertime (where Dave Mevorah is publisher). She became the publisher of both titles last year. The fate of the editor and other staffers has not been determined.

Subscribers will be offered a refund or a subscription to one of the other Disney Publishing titles.

Disney Adventures is the second casualty in the kid magazine category this year since MTV Networks folded its 638,679-circ Nick Jr. Family magazine with the April issue.

The Disney magazine launched in 1990 for kids ages 6-14. Disney Adventures reported 97.9 ad pages in the first half of this year, an increase of 4.5 percent vs. the year-ago period, according to Publishers Information Bureau. The title had a mostly subscriber-based circ of 1.2 million, per its most recent BPA audit of December 2006.

That must be about the only magazine that Disney publishes now.

They should cancel all the magazines and shut down the whole divison. Then eventually start it up again but only publish 1 Disney magazine that encompasses everything going on at the company (Mainly movies and theme parks)

My kids loved Disney Adventures - and I quite like Family Fun too! It gives great cooking ideas for kids, fun crafts - I hope it sticks around.

I'm with BFJen! My kids love the magazine. They devour every page when it finally arrives. This is not going to be happy news in our house.

I remember when Disney Adventures first came out back in the early 90s. it was a lot better back then and was as thick as a Reader's Digest, lots of different comics, educational stuff, and entertainment. Then over the years it got thinner and thinner. I recently took a look at a copy in a local store and couldn't believe how thin they are now.

Disney Magazine was a piece of crud, too, when it ceased publication.

Eisner killed that periodical by moving the operation from California to New York City.

Family Fun we have no use for....usually sits on a table for a couple of days, then it's thrown away.

Disney Adventures was just about my favorite for many years when it first was published. I still have lots of issues of that magazine. I basically wore them out! But it hadn't been that good for a while... so, no big loss in its current state.

They should just leave it to the comic pros that have been publishing the Mickey Mouse, Uncle Scrooge, Walt Disney, and other great comics during the last half century.

So sad! I started collecting almost from the beginning. Until I grew out of it and started getting the now also defunct Disney Magazine, I'd only missed maybe three issues (only one while collecting it, and that was without a subscription [I missed the Beast/Blossom covered issue for those curious]).

Strangely enough, I've been getting DA for free the last few months for reasons unknown. I can only guess it has something to do with with my Disneyland pass and online participation. It really is a shell of it's former self, but it still has some cool things. I too am amazed at how thin it is now.

I may now be missing years of it, and it now longer really appeals to my interest, but still, as an early reader, it's sad to see it die.

Eh...sorry to sound like an embittered old woman, but good riddance, I say. I've been a subscriber since the first days it was published (in fact, I STILL have a -lot- of old issues stowed away, -including- that Blossom and the Beast issue...if you want me to scan a part of it, Tifa, I can!), reading it for the comics and articles, but lately it's been less articles/comics and more blathering about the Disney Channel shows and movies. And while I bought the Ratatouille special for the comics...I just...feel no more need to subscribe to it, cause I could give two figs less about mindless TV programming. They really should have pulled the plug on the magazine LONG ago. :P

I do miss Disney Magazine, however. >_O
