Hugh Dancy and Krysten Ritter have joined Isla Fisher in Disney's romantic comedy "Confessions of a Shopaholic," which P.J. Hogan is directing and Jerry Bruckheimer is producing.

Based on the best-selling novels by Sophie Kinsella, the movie centers on a compulsive shopper (Fisher) in Manhattan up to her neck in debt who becomes a financial-advice columnist.

Dancy stars as the editor of the financial magazine where Fisher works. Ritter plays Fisher's best friend.

Tim Firth, Tracey Jackson and Kayla Alpert worked on the script.

The movie is scheduled to go before cameras next month in New York and Connecticut.

Re: 'Shopaholic'

I'm sorry, I still think this film is a bad idea. They changed the entire plot and the country!

But Hugh Dancy as Luke? Meh.

Re: 'Shopaholic'

I agree about Hugh Dancy as Luke. He doesn't look anything like the Luke Brandon in my mind's eye. I am not sure how the movie will translate from London to New York. So much of the story's charm is because it is based in England. If they are going to do movies of the other books in the story, they are going to have to change plot lines that would only work in England.

I am happy that Sophie Kinsella has reached that point of her career. I really like her writing style.

Re: 'Shopaholic'

Location change can sometimes work very well. Compare Alias Madame Doubtfire to Mrs. Doubtfire someday. Of course, there's some plot changes, but it came to be one of Robin Williams' best films.

So, there's probably not much you can do now, so let's just wait until the movie to judge it... I've been wrong about these kinds of fears many times in the past.

I didn't realize this was disney, or that they were switching countries. I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Re: 'Shopaholic'

Now I'm even more irritated.

I really wanted this to be made in the UK.

Not New York and Connecticut. Yuck. With John Goodman as her dad? What?? And Joan Cusack? Love them, but noooooo!

I think we all wanted it to be at least based in the UK, but then Ilsa would have to fake a british accent. But it'd be a welcome change, almost every romantic comedy is set in New York.
But Sophie Kinsella said she's visited the set and she was quite impressed with Becky's shoe collection. Plus she said that she made up half the store names and such in the book so it's not like they'd be real (like Denny & George and such). But still, yeah...it stinks.

What makes Becky so charming is her Britishness.
