Hannah Montana #1 at Box Office; Disney Extends Movie's Run

In a record-breaking debut, Disney's Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert film finished #1 at the box office this weekend. Buoyed by the success, Disney announced they would extend the limited-edition run of the 3D film, but did not indicate for how long.

Hannah/Miley took in $29 million, making it the highest-grossing film ever on a Super Bowl weekend. It also set the record for the highest gross by a film released on fewer than 1,000 screens.

That is so crazy! Of course, had it been playing here I would have seen it.

I attended 2 sold out showings this weekend- it was quite an experience and a lot of fun, suprisingly. The 3D seemed more for show than anything else, but its certainly a more wallet friendly alternative to the real deal, and probably nearly as much fun for the kids.

You saw it twice in a theater packed with tweens? I'm in awe of your strength and stamina.

Re: Hannah Montana #1 at Box Office; Disney Extends Movie's Run

Well, I didn't watch the WHOLE thing twice, I saw most of it once if you combine both showings

I was in a back corner hiding. It was pretty funny to watch them swaying and singing, and their reactions to the 3D effects were funny to watch.

Actually, the funniest thing was their reaction to the U2 3D trailer- most of these kids don't even know who U2 are probably, but they definitely wanted to see the movie!

I'd go if it wasn't $15 a ticket.

^ Speaking of which, they should be factoring this in when they calculate the totals for movies like this. The only reason Hannah Montana probably grossed that much is because the tickets for 3D movies cost $3-5 more on average for a ticket. Multiply that times thousands of tickets, and that's a lot more money than it probably would've made had it been at a regular price level.

A fair point, but let's break it down just for the sake of argument. Assuming a ticket to see Hannah Montana costs $15, that still comes out to 1.9 million tickets sold. I like round figures, so let's call it 2 million. 2 million tickets times $10 to see it in a regular theater means a gross of $20 million . . . still beating this week's 2nd place movie (Jessica Alba's The Eye) by $7 million. That's astounding on a weekend traditionally not known for big movie box office.

I'm sure Hannah Montana fans (not to mention their parents) found the cost of seeing a 3D concert movie quite reasonable compared to paying what tickets were going for to see Miley Cyrus perform live --assuming you could even find them.

Re: Hannah Montana #1 at Box Office; Disney Extends Movie's Run

When you factor in the number of screens it opened on (less than 700) the nu,ber is even more remarkable. This is a historically slow weekend for the movies and 30 million is a lot of money, no matter how you break it down.

The DLP technology is very expensive to upgrade to which is why most chains haven't done so- with numbers like this, you can bet more cinemas will be thinking about making that switch- especially with more 3D offerings on the horizon.

Re: Hannah Montana #1 at Box Office; Disney Extends Movie's Run

I find it funny that Hannah Montana grossed $30 million this weekend yet U2:3D has only grossed just over $2 million TOTAL.

What is this world coming to?

That said, Belle and our daughter have tickets to see it at the El Capitan on Thursday.
