Disney sets new 'Muppets' movie team

Segal and Stroller take on Muppets

'Marshall' duo to write, direct film for Disney

Kermit

By Michael Fleming
Variety
March 12, 2008

Quote:
Disney has enlisted scribe-thesp Jason Segal and helmer Nick Stroller to create the next Muppet movie for the studio.

Segel and Stoller will write the script and Stoller will direct.

Segel, who graduated from Apatow-produced skeins "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" got his first sole writing credit on the Apatow-produced "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." Universal releases the pic, which Stoller directed, on April 18.

Re: Disney sets new 'Muppets' movie team

Interesting. The choice of these guys gives me some hope that whatever they do won't just be watered down kidcentric Muppets. However I hope they don't go too far the other way either. I'm cautiously optimistic for now.

It doesn't come out until next month. No one has seen it yet. There is a trailer online though if you go looking.

I am excited! I think the muppets can be enduring characters. They just have to become relivant again! Hopefully this will do just that!

That is great news! I wish they would release it in 3-D. The one at Disneyland is amazing.

It just had it's premiere at SXSW, full reviews at the links:

Bottom Line: Solid rom com finds another Judd Apatow acolyte moving into the spotlight.

The Hollywood Reporter

Resort workers like Jonah Hill, left, can't help but feel sorry for Jason Segel.

South by Southwest

Quote:
AUSTIN -- Move over, Greg Mottola: Time to welcome Nicholas Stoller to the clique of directors whose unusually yuk-heavy films will be credited largely to producer and male-nudity aficionado Judd Apatow.

"Forgetting Sarah Marshall" might not be as outrageous as "Superbad" or as unusual as "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," but it's another comedy that works better than its template promises and should perform well (if not breakthrough, star-making well) at the boxoffice when Universal opens it April 18.

Quote:
Reprising his successful "Knocked Up" formula of uninhibited bawdiness and chick-flick sweetness, with side orders of slapstick and showbiz satire, producer Judd Apatow looks to have scored another long-legged hit with "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." Crowd-pleasing confection sees the comedy auteur once again hooking up with fellow vets of cult-fave teleseries "Freaks and Geeks" and "Undeclared" -- including, in this case, director Nick Stoller and scripter-star Jason Segel -- who are perfectly in sync with his snarky romantic-comedy sensibilities. Result is a film that, like "Knocked Up," should generate repeat biz among ticketbuyers and memorable homevid sales and rentals.
