    Los Angeles Alligator Farm guestbook

    Los Angeles Alligator Farm
The Los Angeles Alligator Farm, located next door to the Los Angeles Ostrich Farm in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, United States, was a major city tourist attraction from 1907 until 1953. Originally situated across from Lincoln Park, at 3627 Mission Road, it moved to Buena Park, California in 1953 and shut down a few years later.

I believe this was located across the street from Knott's Berry Farm.
    Did you ever go?

emember those little hard plastic deer you used to get at the keep park? I had a collection of them that I used to keep with my animals that came with The Zoo at Farells.

Deer Park and Lion Country Safari are two long lost OC friends. I've never heard of the Aligator park. I'll have to look it up.

Once we get the new version of the DIG up, we should add a section for SoCal tourist attractions of the past.

I just remember that you drove through it and that my dad would always roll down the windows and tell my sister that he was going to feed her to the lions.

It was a very different time and place. Can you even imagine a drive through animal park today?

I have a hard time imaginaning Lions in Irvine!

Bubbles the Hippo escaped one time and was found somewhere in Lake Forest.

I get these strange flashes of memory about these things. Very random.

I remember that! Didn't she drown in a drainage ditch?

Re: Los Angeles Alligator Farm guestbook

I found the news clip on OCAlmanac: http://www.ocalmanac.com/History/hi01i.htm

    From 1979:
A hippo named "Bubbles" escapes from Lion Country Safari and takes up residence in a rain-filled pond. For several days, authorities attempt to coax her out and end up tranquilizing her, only to watch in horror as she descends under the pond waters. Their efforts to pull the tranquilized 4,000-pound hippo out of the water are to no avail and Bubbles sadly drowns.

OMG! I didn't remember (of course) that she drowned!

I do remember when Frazier died and the burried him on a hilltop above the park. There was a cross up there for the longest time.

Re: Los Angeles Alligator Farm guestbook

Why am I punishing myself? OC history is too sad.

    From 1975:

The owners of Japanese Deer Park, facing mounting red ink, begin giving lethal injections to their deer, claiming the animals have tuberculosis. Almost 200 of the deer are killed before the authorities stop them, ruling that the massacre was obviously for economic reasons.

Re: Los Angeles Alligator Farm guestbook

They killed 200 deer! I'm so sad. But here is the really horrible part:

The surviving deer are donated to UC Davis for use in experiments.
So once they figured out that the deer were being killed for economic reasons, they stopped the killing only to turn the animals over to be experimented on???? Don't you just love history? Crazy.
