Knotts Scary Farm Haunt 2009 Review

Last night I visited the Knott's Scary Farm Haunt. It was very fun, and I will go into more detail about my evening in the review below.

We arrived at Knott's at 4:00, andwe had buffet seating at 5:00. We were let in at about 4:20 and we had a wonderful meal that we finished at about 6:00. We left Spur's and got in line for Ghostrider. It had just reopened for Haunt and we were the first in line. Ride in the back! So much fun!

When we got off we only had about 5 minutes left before the Haunt opened to buffet guests at 6:30. And so the fun begins...
    --------------------

The first place we went to was Black Widows Cavern. Unforunately, we were placed in he first car and the scares are practically non-existant. The monsters and effects just skipped over the first car! I think I was scared once during the ride and that was from a scare that happened in the second car. However, the mood the ride set was very creepy, so I give props for that. Hopefully a system can be used that alternates the cars being scared. Actor A scares cars 1 & 3, Actor B scares 2 & 4 and so on and so forth.

    RATING: 6/10
    --------------------

Pyromaniax was next, and I enjoyed it. I liked this better than the mine ride due to the fact that EVERYONE will be scared multiple times due to the fact that guests are ridingin four person logs. However what knocks this attraction's score down is the weak theme. Seemed as though there were even less fire effects at the end than there were last year, and that was one of the best parts. I think that a new theme should be given to this next year.

    RATING: 7/10
    --------------------

We continued to Uncle Bobo's Big Top of the Bizzare and this one was very well done. This maze is much darker in theme than KIller Klown Kollege. The 3-D aspect is what makes it, and to fully experience this maze, the glassses are a must. The maze is bland without them. The first time we went in there was so much fog and darkness in the beginning that I literally needed to put my hands out and feel around. That was intense! The spinning tunnel was great as well. Scares were not as strong as I had hoped; the clowns stared more than scared. But overall, it was a step up from KKK.

    RATING: 8/10
    --------------------

We continued on to Quarantine. The first time through I was majorly disappointed. I don't know what happened - it was so great last year. Some monsters didn't even seem to care and were standing in a corner doing NOTHING. Some monsters were great, but couldn't carry the weight of the rest of the monsters that could care less. Really sad - I was hoping it would of have been as great as 2008. The second time I went through it was a little better, but I still wasn't wowed like last year.

    RATING: 4/10
    --------------------

Up next, Cornstalkers. I don't know why anybody said that it was ruined this year. It was amazing, just like last year. I didn't find the fiesta village lights to be too intrusive, and you can hardly notice them while in the maze. What also made this maze awesome was that I was the first in the group and there was nobody ahead of me and it was just really creepy and I got scared lot! One of the scares in one of the rooms scared me so much I almost fell over and was about to start a human domino line. Excellent work, Cornstalkers!

    RATING: 9/10
    --------------------

We continued to Labyrinth and that one was consistent with last year. Good creepy factor, good costumes, good sets. An overall good maze that I enjoyed very much. The second time we went in we enjoyed watching a group of 12-13 year old boys that thought they were fearless jump so high they practically hit the cieling. Not much has changed from last year, but that is good, the maze is good anyway.

    RATING: 8/10
    --------------------

The Slaughterhouse was next on the list and it seems as though it has slipped a bit from last year. Not enough talent within the maze and I think that was the primary reason this dropped down a bit. The BBQ booth that was out front last year is not there and there is no smell of BBQ wafting through the maze. That added a sense of reality to the maze. I did like the room themselves though, including the freezer and meat grinder room. We only bothered going
    through this maze once.

    RATING: 5/10
    --------------------

Alien Annhilation was next. Honestly I thought that it was better than last year. One of the reasons that it may of seemed better was the fact that it was only my friend and I going through the maze. Nobody ahead. Nobody behinnd. Scares were weak though, and the laser guns were pointless. I would not do it again though and I hope that this one leaves next year.

    RATING: 3/10
    --------------------

Time for a short intermission. I need to rest my fingers from iPhone typing. I will be back with the rest soon.

Re: Knotts Scary Farm Haunt 2009 Review

    And the haunting continues...
    --------------------

We move on to one of the mazes that I was looking forward to most: Lockdown. Let me just say one thing right now: This maze was the BOMB! FANTASTIC! Excellent scare factor, excellent sets and was extremely enjoyable. Scareactors were everywhere - scaring around every corner. I don't think that I found one bad thing about this maze, and if I did miss something it must have been VERY minut. We went through this maze three times and the third time around we were the only ones in the area - like Alien Annihilation. I would do this maze 10 more times if I could - I loved it that much. Bravo haunt designers and Lockdown actors for a job well done!

    RATING: 10/10
    --------------------

Club Blood was next. Like Labyrinth, not much has changed and has stayed consistent with the 2008 version. If you did it in 2008, you've done it in 2009. Not really going to go into much more detail than that.

    RATING: 8/10
    --------------------

    BONUS FEATURE!!

The Stepfather Scare scene - don't even waste your time going in there - we didn't even go in the second time when there were maybe 5 people in line. The first time we went in we waited for about 15 minutes. It was so awful it was not even funny (actually it was, my friend came out laughing). Not going to give away any spoilers, but it was just bad. Sorry Knotts, you messed up with this one.

    RATING: -1/10

    --------------------

Now we get to the one that many have been waiting for... Terror of London. This maze was beautiful in terms of set design and the mood it set is extremely eerie. The graveyard scene is probably one of the best rooms that I have ever seen at Haunt. Some of the scareactors have shovels they scrape along the ground that scared me half to death. One room gave me goosebumps and was super creepy. A cool effect is present in a tunnel in the maze - but I don't want to give away any spoilers. I got a few good scares in this maze, but I think it suffers from too much room and not enough actors. There were quite a few hallways with nobody in sight. Also, the Dr. Jeckell and Mr. Hyde setup was poor. It was so small and, unless you already knew that it was Mr. Hyde, then there is no indication of where you are at. Sort of confusing. Also, the maze kind of just ends with no big ending, which was disappointing. But overall this was a solid maze that most likely be improved and become the next "Doll Factory" type of signature maze.

    RATING: 9/10
    --------------------

Dia de los Muertos was next, and we loved this maze. It was not too scary, but the sets and colors and detail was FANTASTIC. We loved the Jungle room and the actor look-alike room (where you can't tell who is real and who isn't). The colors were so vivid and the constumes were neat. Lots of blacklighting is used in this maze. Also, the graveyard room was on par with Terror of London's. Amazing, simply amazing. I look forward to enjoying this maze for years to come.

    RATING: 9/10
    --------------------

And that brought us to the Doll Factory. As with Club Blood and Labyrinth, hardly anything has changed since 2008 - but that is not a bad thing! We love this maze, but I anticipate that this may one of the last seasons for this oldie, but goodie. One thing that I miss from 2008 was the doll girl at the entrance to the dollhouse. She is no longer there . This maze is still great and I still enjoyed it.

    RATING: 8/10
    ---------------------

Overall I think that this was a solid year for Knott's Scary Farm and I had a great time.

One thing I do want to note is that the crowds were VERY light on Saturday. It made it much more enjoyable and we did almost every maze twice and did lots and lots of rides.

Make a visit to Knott's this year - it's worth the trip.

Re: Knotts Scary Farm Haunt 2009 Review

my thoughts were different since the experiences of last night were compared to memories of a decade ago (last time I attended Haunt). I had never been to the buffet before. I loved the social aspect of the buffet but felt the layout of the food itself was a major mistake. Many individuals were able to get their initial plate, but failed to make a return trip due to an extremely long line. I believe part of the confusion was a lack of communication that there was the same food on BOTH sides of the table... What should have been 4 lines (meat, 2 at center table, and desserts) became 1 long one stretching from the cut meat to the pies at the end. Several individuals tried to merge in behind the cut meat (wanting only the center table food) but eventually the line prohibited even this shortcut. I left content but I would have enjoyed a little more food. The mugs (Tink and I both went), early entry, and free refills made up for this. At the end of Haunt Tink and I decided to pass on the breakfast buffet. We remembered the experience earlier in the evening and saw the substantial crowds gathering around the open door... We fled to Denny's and enjoyed a single breakfast serving instead. I think we made it home somewhere around 2am.

Yes, I noticed that as well. A new system is definitely needed. Fortunately we were seated very, very early and we were among the only groups in there when we ate, so I didn't have to deal with the lines - at first. I went up later before we left to get one more round of food - big mistake. It was such a nightmare.

Thanks for all of the hard work & Detail. Great reviews, Alien Anniliation was horrible even less than a 3 in my book. Quarantine could have been good buit there was a lack of scares in there. Dia DeLos Muertos didn't have quite so many frights but was so creepy and beautiful it get a high mark from me too.

Only issue was Cornstalkers. It was average and the smell of the corn/hay was pretty nasty. Great idea, adaqute execution.

    Thanks again!

The reason that I gave AA a 3/10 was due to the fact that the four of us were the only ones in that group so we recieved all the scares. Had I gone through with many people then I would have probably given it a lower rating.

I agree that the corn's smell was somewhat annoying and could see that if a person was sensitive to that smell then the maze would be unenjoyable. I personally did not mind it that much and the scares were in great supply for me so that is why I gave it a high rating.

I had a great time. This was my first Mice Chat event and I have to say having a tour guide was the best part! I can't believe we made it through all the mazes and still had plenty of time for rides... or funnel cake. I made a gallery from the pics I snapped here. Thanks everyone for a great night!
