Looks like Cypress Gardens is going to be turned into Legoland Florida

Cypress Gardens to be turned into a Legoland - Bay News 9

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (AP) - The new owner of Cypress Gardens reportedly plans to turn the venerable Florida theme park known for its water ski shows and Southern belles into a new Legoland.

An e-mail leaked out Wednesday from a Polk County tourism official to county commissioners says Merlin Entertainments Group will transform Cypress Gardens into Legoland Florida. The British company was planning a news conference on Thursday with Gov. Charlie Crist.

A spokeswoman from Merlin Entertainments Group last week confirmed the acquisition of Cypress Gardens but offered no details on the company's plans.

The Ledger newspaper in Lakeland has learned that the sale price was $22.3 million.

    It's Official!!!

Legoland Florida: Details of new Legoland park revealed - OrlandoSentinel.com

Central Florida will be home to the world's largest Legoland by the end of 2011, Merlin Entertainments Group said Thursday.
The park, which is planned for the former site of the historic Cypress Gardens, is expected to create more than 1,000 jobs. The historical gardens will stay intact, according to Nick Varney, Merlin's chief executive officer.

Varney announced the details of Florida's newest theme park at a news conference attended by government and tourism officials, including Florida Governor Charlie Crist.

Varney kicked off the event by calling Legoland Florida's "worst-kept secret," referring to the fact that details of today's announcement leaked out Wednesday, after an email surfaced confirming that it was indeed Legoland that was coming to Polk County.

Legoland, Varney said, "is without question one of the strongest brands in the world."

I'm happy they found a good fit with the "gardens" part of the park and a theme park that cares for aesthetics.

Cool - not sure why they would pay so much for a location so far away... but they are smart people. Probably some reason.

I mean why not develop Legoland on some other existing property near all the hotels/disney/etc of the I-4 corridor? I did't think land was that scarce.

Is there a big enough community of middle class young families within an hour drive to form the core of support for the park? Will the Orlando tourist crowd go a fair bit out of their way to go to a Legoland? I'm inclined to believe this will be a failure but hope I am proven wrong since Legoland does excellent parks and the Gardens are beautiful. Will location, location, location be its downfall? It'll be interesting to track this one after it opens.

Considering that the same company that has ties to Sea World, Busch Gardens and Universal, you are going to see a very nice "add-on" for Legoland.

I think you will also likely see some kind of shuttle from Sea World to Legoland, if they aren't considering it, they should be.

The other thing you are going to see from Legoland is BRAND RECOGNITION.

People outside of Florida and Theme Park people have no idea what Cypress Gardens is. Legoland however is instantly identifiable.

Wasn't there a trip report to Cypress Garden on here at some point? My search turned up nothing but maybe it was on another site.

I think people will take the hour ride. We have driven to Cypress Gardens before from WDW, we also we too Busch Gardens and Kennedy Space center. If the theme park is worth it, people will drive.

They're going to build in 2 phases. Phase 1 will be the Legoland park. Phase 2 will be hotels/shopping/restaurants.

But yeah the location is WAY off I-4 and you have to go through ghetto Winter Haven to get there. Hopefully this will make the town less ghetto (even just a little bit).

The real question (for me) is will my lifetime Ambassador pass be good at the new park?! I hope so! After all, it is good at any Legoland park in the world right now.

Glad they are keeping the ski show and a classic wooden coaster... as well as one of the most scenic garden areas. In this way, the park will be more immersively themed than ever.. while at the same time maintaining the best parts of the former Cypress Gardens. Should please many of the locals, too.

I'm thrilled about the news. The last time Cypress went bankrupt we almost got a housing development. This preserves the best parts of Cypress and makes it more viable to modern theme park goers.

Hopefully they'll build a park with a wider audience than the toddler-to-10 set that Lego usually targets.

Certainly a wise move by Blackstone AND a great way to save some historic elements of Cypress Gardens.

    Cheers,

    Dusty

Disney's already turning the Magic Kingdom into a toddler to 10 set, especially if they are girls.
