The Mother's Day Trip to San Diego Zoo

Yes you are reading this correctly... on May 7th we went up to San Simeon http://micechat.com/forums/other-the...le-beyond.html. On May 8th we drove back home to LA. And after a brief rest on May 9th went the other direction and drove down to the San Diego Zoo. In 1 weekend I went from Central Coast all the way down to the border.

To be fair we didn't actually make it to the SD Zoo until close to 1pm. We slept in. Tink and I had an extra ticket (we have AP's) and we wanted to thank my Mom for watching the kids 2 consecutive days/nights... so off we went.

Since we've been many times there was no big rush to do anything. They had all sorts of booths set up about gardening. The kids answered trivia and won seeds.

The littlest one... just enjoying the stroller.

    making flower bookmarks

Meercats in their new exhibit... so close you could almost touch them.

I call this my penguin photo because all of them are staring at the exact same spot! Lovely macaw

A couple pure white racing pigeons

    cute little otter

    Look Daddy a prairie dog.

the kids just enjoying the show

Otters again (right after the show, previous shot was taken while the show was going on)

    Everyone picked their favorite bug

and then we saw the real things

this was sort of cool, it is a pipe leading from the bee hive outside... so the kids can see all the bees...

on the way out of the kids section the macaw was out again.

Going through monkey trails, these two were content to rest 20ft up in the air.

now that is a serious nest... some 200-400 birds make it as a colony... wow.

sorry for the glass reflection but that is a really creepy croc resting in the water.

Which brings me to the reason I LOVE this Zoo... they make excellent use of full glass walls so little kids can see everything without their parents pulling them out of strollers!

almost tripped over this guy in the aviary

then we saw this beauty sitting on a branch

my beloved hippo exhibit first time around.

    the peacock claimed the enclosure

    Hey Dad a Panda

Pandas are her favorite. She is very quiet and softly saying Panda the entire time.

    very busy eating

This is the 9 month old cub climbing the tree. Brief comment on this. I upset a few people when I took this. There is a "line" going through the exhibit. However most people press against the side as much as possible. If the person in front of you moves, and you don't for a prolonged period of time.., people will go around you. And in this case nail the perfect shot.

    Mom getting a bite

Sorry for the downward angle but I thought this was cool. Two otters playing around attracted the attention of a monkey.

Hippos second time around. THIS is why I love this exhibit. Hippos spend the majority of their time under the water. Sparkletts sponsored this exhibit which has a 10ft glass wall showing both above and under the water. In this case one stood on the rock while the other walked around.

par of the tiger exhibit. You can make him out in the center of the shot. You can't see it in the shot but there are some deep scratches in the glass on this wall. We've walked through before when he was playing with the kids pawing at the glass.

yes that is a flamingo egg in the nest.

    he liked the Catalina rattlesnake.

    she loved the beaded lizard

sorry for the blur it is a green viper.

    random cool looking snake

again hats off to the design team. I LOVE the reptile house for the same reason I enjoy the zoo... look how close he is to the komodo dragon.

So we didn't see a whole lot when you compare it to the entire zoo but we were there from 1-6pm. We took our time and went at our own pace. My mom hadn't been in several years and all she wanted to see were the tigers and the pandas. The walk to the polar bears/elephants would have been too much so we planned accordingly going up Monkey Trails and back down the Tiger trail.

It's so nice to see kids enjoying their interaction with the animals, it's so important to introduce them to animals while they're young so they can appreciate them when they grow up. After all, they'll be responsible for protecting animals long after we're all gone. The San Diego Zoo does an excellent job of preservation as well as education, I really like spending money there.
